Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Counteroffers for people thinking of leaving

I heard a rumor about someone in another department who was about to resign but then decided to stay. They mentioned getting a much better offer from the company to reconsider. Is that something that actually happens here at Exxon? I've never personally known anyone to get a retention offer like that, but I don't see why the guy would lie.

@OP Extremely rare in HC10 for a true expert. Anywhere else, very likely will resort to a don’t let your a-s close the door on the way out when you exit.

I am friends with one person that announced they were leaving after receiving an offer and they were pulled aside and convinced to stay. Was never told what was offered to keep them here and never probed further. But they are a SME in their area.

@b2 This.

Anyone in this situation has already tipped-off their management that they’re a flight risk. In the unlikely event that a counter-offer is extended, it would only be to allow the company more time to backfill the role. Once that happens, they can expect to be put on a PIP or fired outright. That’s right kids, your employer can fire you looking for another job.

I never tell anyone at my current job that I’m looking, I never tell them where I’m going, and I never back off once I give notice. This is the way.

Accepting a counter offer is probably the biggest mistake you can make. After threatening to resign and then backing off, trust is definitely gone. You'll be thrown under the bus at the first opportunity for the employer.

Might happen for a high ranking SME that is well thought of but 99% of instances, no

I know that some folks got a few thousand RSUs to revoke their resignation. Obviously they had to sign an NDA.

I wouldn’t call it a counteroffer, but one of my neighbors wanted to retire and they basically doubled his salary to keep him for another year or so. He’s a higher up, so don’t expect that to happen if you’re a grunt like the rest of us :/
