Seniority at UP

I talked to someone at UP on another platform and was told seniority with UP only determined your shift and off days. Management will line up individuals on any job they want to and seniority does not matter.

How is that working out for the car department being managed by locomotive side and what has that changed?

That’s the way it is at my shop. It all changed in 2019 when UP started shuttering shops and laying massive amounts of people off. At that time if you were lucky enough to keep your job you had to work every holiday regardless of seniority and you were doing every mechanical locomotive job plus hostlimg to and from trains and on the main line. It’s only gotten slightly better because they couldn’t figure out how to make a person do all the jobs at the same time. The yard master would call you asking when the power was going to be ready and you’d reply you were out hostling so who knows? Also the car department has been recently given to locomotive management. Those poor car toads are treated horribly!

I heard that any shop that are within 500 miles of a UP location once the merger takes place are to become a "crew change point". They may cut jobs or even offer another locations, so it sounds like NS employees will have to decide if they want to pack up their family and relocate to another city or better yet another state.

Carrier's will bid jobs as a work pool and assign jobs daily from the pool. Classic Sharp shooting the agreement.
Just saying!!!

Plus vacation time off and who is forced to work on the holidays. Although many locations are forced at 100% on holidays due to many factors, but head count seems to be one of the main factors. (This may only apply to the mechanical side of operations). On a side note, good luck to everyone, seems its going to be a rough ride for employees on both sides, stay safe and follow the rules to the letter.
