@OP let go Nebraska approaching 20 years. During the holidays and close to retirement age. How convenient.

You've never been laid off with notice before or you'd be grateful. If you're told we're laying you off in x days or weeks it is embarrassing in the office, everyone looks at you with pity, awkwardly saying random things about 'this place', telling you how much they're going to miss you...It is a public execution. From experience, immediate departure is the most humane method.

Many states are right to work, which means in simple terms you can be terminated for any reason at all. At Pepsi if you wore a Coca Cola tie, that was a done job. A red tie? Wrong shoes? Does not matter. Your state may have the same rule so check that out. I have seen personally a talented engineer fired same day with a simple phone call. (When do I leave? ---- Now was the answer. I had no problem giving 1 day notice to this job a few weeks later). Same company a talented HR employee was terminated next day but at least the manager did it in person. Sameday - leave NOW. There is no repeat NO love between employer and employee.
