@cg Agreed. I often muse - If we have ~ $140B in debt, and ~ $160B in market cap, what is the company truly worth? Free cash flow can dry up pretty quickly. What happens if we get replaced in the Dow 30 by TMUS?

The company is taking an initial charge for the severances to the tune of billions this or next quarter depending on when the payout is payed. Going forward, hopefully the company begins to pay down this ungodly amount of debt. Otherwise we’re all gone with no severance to be had.

The RIF had nothing to do with paying a dividend, the company enjoys over 50% Free Cash Flow. Dan wants $$$ to pay for the next big thing, i.e., AOL, Yahoo, etc.

This is not a "freebie." Investors make decisions to purchase a stock based on expected return yields including the dividend payout rate (if a stock pays one out).
Besides employees, Stockholders are key stakeholders in the company (i.e., "Owners") who have put up the funding (i.e., investing in the business) at risk to them.
To expect Shareholders to not receive their proper returns, even during events like company downsizing, is not realistic.
Another win for the vteam! I’m proud to work here because we don’t just brag about our immorally earned success, we volunteer to give back and brag about that too! @OP Got the RIF but also a shareholder so I’ll take the divs. Just wish the stock price would go up.
