Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Where did the idea of replacing Carmen with Switchmen/Utility men come from?

Does anyone know,or have any ideas, about how Carmen are being replaced?
Where did it start from, who implemented this idea?
Is it any one individual or location that came up with the idea??????

0600 am on duty and hopefully I'm done non stop switching until 1130.
Maybe sooner if customers highball the switch and I pull the VCRR and 40 loaded autoracks and 10 boxcars.

I'm getting to old and trying to get to Retirement and out of here for the next stUPid fool to bid and award it

As someone stated on autonomous inspections on track inspections, they just cut most of the geometry car guys last week.....after proven positive results the plan is to cut down track inspectors (notice how I did not say all track inspectors) they will have inspectors still, but cuts are expected to be anywhere from 50% -66% later. And cross training IS part of the whole plan. The Foreman dates will include inspectors dates (being worked on already)
We can thank some of the inspectors who never really done their job our su-ked up y not showing each and every defect. They ARE working on proving that automation caught more defects than inspectors (not talking about inspectors who do their job correctly, because they are out there) Already seen reports of inspections that caught more defects than inspectors (I know people are going to say "it can't inspect switches" well, of course it can't, but it can inspect main line and we are already talking about one dedicated inspector to check switches, remember we asked for a waiver to physically inspect track from 8 times a month to 4 times a month, for those of you who just wanna say "not true" and furthermore, the Foreman that will be qualified to inspect track will be utilized to inspect autonomous "dings" for lack of a better word, freeing up the dedicated inspector to do his switch inspections......here it comes guys, tell the lazy inspectors and the ones that are buddies with the local managers to do their job, and yes it was with he help of the direction we voted

@n4 except for the fact that mass layoffs have been happening since the Obama administration.

Considering the new FRA administrator is the former president of a railroad, there will be much more to come. Elections have consequences.

FRA is gonna allow unmanned track inspections to. Once the deem it successful they will cut track inspectors. Also trying to eliminate 4 year Relay tests and 10 year cable tests. Signal techs will be cut too. It's HOW WE WIN hahhahhahha

@hy lmfao typical answer. I’m not going to look up information for you. It’s there and it was added right after the last contract was signed. Lazy pile that can’t do anything unless someone else does it. Typical railroader

@h7 your “facts” are in your own mind. I’m FRA and have been for over 25 years. What you said in your post is not true.

@hb I really hope so. I am so sick and tired of hearing “I dont need to know how to do what you are doing in order for me to manage you”
Really lil miss nancy boy manager? If you dont know how to do these tasks how would you know how long it would take to do the task? How would you know how to safely do the task? How would you know how to create a business case for how to improve doing the task? Ive had managers actually try to teach me how to safely open a truck door? These stupid managers cant find a crossing without someone sending them a pin drop on their phone but these clowns wearing hey dudes to work are teaching how to open a car door? WTF?

I blame the FRA. They got a rule that if no qualified mechanical personnel are present it doesn’t need to be inspected

Over all about 15yrs ago some limp wristed, soft handed, classroom brainwashed mo--ns came up with “cross craft” training. The brain dead clueless id--ts think all anyone needs is to watch a CBT video and they can go do that icky dirty work outside as punishment for not going to a magical place called college. These useless overeducated know nothing fools tell each other railroaders are over paid and should have to labor more hours and generate more production in the same amount of time so that the managers can be paid more money while they adjust the thermostat in their air conditioned office. This is why it is imperative these dipsh-ts should be forced to go work in the systems they themselves created so they can then begin to be truly educated in the railroad industry.

Transportation people cried about bad orders (I mean getting in trouble for doing trouble job) So they made sure the trains don’t get inspected anymore..And the joke FRA let them do it

It came from the top mechanical guy JG. He is replacing the machinist craft in most small shops with laborers and he is doing the same with the Carmen. It’s a numbers game based on what craft has the most people. So Carmen and Machinist are on the chopping block thanks to the spineless unions that are happy to take your money for nothing.

Can you enlighten me more about what they are doing with Carmen at UP?
I’ve heard they are trying to get laborers qualified for inspections. Are they trying to come up with a super worker?
