Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Talent Upleveling - Compounding Problem

One problem Nike has that doesn't get discussed enough is how they are so reluctant to promote people anymore. The promotions wave after this round of layoffs is hardly what it should have been when you stretch that over years of time that they froze nearly all promotions.

It's a self-defeating circle: do nothing to advance people, let them get TOO expert in their roles that they get bored, productivity suffers, now they have a case to lay you off because you deliver "poor quality work". Sure, not everyone gets a promotion, but we routinely see people complain on here about how few people ever got a promotion, and how many talented hard working people have left over the past 5 years.

Did any of these incompetent imbeciles ever stop and think about that spiral of enshittification? They must know this cycle is of their own making and is a key reason why talent that remains are in such a weird place.

Promotions go to those with the highest number of hr violations and those who breed a toxic work culture.
If you have talent and voice - you move on to another company - too many amazing talents this year left for promotions to On and Adi - let’s see what’s going to be coming out of On and Adi in the next two years

In my function we have lost incredibly talented people because they are tired of over-delivering and not getting recognized so they leave and then we end up hiring someone who takes a year to onboard and then the cycle repeats- its utter insanity

There are far more people who are just as incompetent in their role 5 years later than there are those that become overqualified.

This is a systemic issue at Nike, and it’s been this way for a long time. Nike wants to hire ‘ringers’ rather than promote from within. The company is a brand, and nothing but marketing matters. The only way to move up is to either leave or transition to a position on another team.

….but none of this is ultimately relevant given that we can only hire in India.
