@ac yet another spelling, grammar and punctuation clinic.
@bq - I don't think the dude has such a terrible life. If you read his story carefully you'll note he was able to provide for his family, influenced young people positively, has a relationship with God, owns his own house and is still employed.
That sounds a lot more fulfilled than claiming you have no money and can't get ahead in life because others are standing in you way.
Just saying...
ah, yeah, 13,000 of us are unwillingly considering early [forced] retirement
@aj you never enjoyed eating out never had a new car, came from a family that had nothing , had to work multiple jobs worked your tail off for 50 years. Wow that sounds like the American dream !!! Let me explain something to you real simple YOU MY FRIEND HAVE HAD A TERRIBLE LIFE and your actually bragging about it and giving life advice to other people.
Oh heck no… I’m retired in place.
@aj Are the DEI obsessed and "union bloat" commenter? I see you also furiously upvote your own comment.
@b5 you don’t know me or my work ethic. I’ve been working for over 10 years and have very little to show for it. I have a degree and certifications yet I’ve had to take jobs beneath my skill level due to companies not willing to hire junior employees or provide mentorship. Almost every job posting in my field is a “senior” position or requires 5+ years experience which is impossible to have when you’re entering the work force. Then there’s the insane rent prices, housing prices, inflation, student loans. People like you are quick to call us lazy but fail to see that the world is just worse now than it was in your time.
@ae your generation doesn’t have work ethic . You want everything to be easy or you don’t wanna do it … you have alot of nerve attacking one of the old school men and women who built this company to what it is today . You should be thanking them for the opportunity they built for you.
Health insurance is the issue. Need to work through 65
@at as much as people criticize the Swedish meatball, I think it’s nice that he offered VSP. It allowed people to leave the company on their own terms. What we went through was a god-awful bloodbath.
I didn't retire early, as that was a non starter for me. But at 68, the numbers added up with the VSP! I'm out and happy I am. So much drama now. I still live vicariously through coworkers still employed, but do not miss any of it. For those on the fence, this to shall pass.

@am it all depends on your expected expenses in retirement. If you go to the Fidelity website, there’s a calculator that can help you figure out the number you need to hit.
@ae sorry, but without skills you're going to be replaced by an old codger or ai
How much $$ is needed to retire at 55 ? Moderate/good health, house paid, kids education done
@ae - "my generation can’t get good jobs, can’t afford..."
Only losers speak in such terms. I came from a family who had absolutely nothing and worked my tail off for the last 50 years (no exaggeration at all).
Paid for my own college and graduate school. Worked multiple jobs to save up for a house. Never bought a new car. Did my own house and car repairs, as well as yard maintenance. Painted my houses inside and outside. Didn't spend on extravagant vacations, eating out or other frivolous items. I could go on and on. Basically I did whatever I had to in order to get ahead in life (legally and morally, of course).
On top of that I was always involved supporting my family, served regularly at church working with youth and was active in the community.
Meanwhile the younger generation(s) have very limited motivation to work hard to succeed as they were given everything from their parents. Took meaningless classes in school. Never held jobs growing up. Played endless video games. Glued to their phones and wasted years on the internet watching videos. Know nothing about nor have any desire to roll up their sleeves to perform any manual tasks (e.g., yard work, etc.). Are waiting for someone else to give them an inheritance. I could similarly go on and on.
In order to get ahead you've got to have to take personal responsibility for yourself and get out into the world and make things happen. No excuses. Getting rich is not where satisfaction comes from, but rather thru the struggle along the way. Personal success will follow when you set your mind to it. It's also most important to trust your life to the Lord as he has a plan mapped out for you.
Wish you the best, go make it happen!
I would love to after being laid off and looking at the market but cost of healthcare is a nightmare situation.
If it really starts to go downhill after the changes I will just retire after I hit 30 years soon, also the high gatt rate is a bummer but if need be I will leave and survive on what I got.
@ab my generation can’t get good jobs, can’t afford houses and are struggling to survive and this is some sort of pastime for you? Gtfo of the job market you had your time.
I need to work another 3 to 5 years to reach my FIRE savings goal. I was even hoping to retire from Verizon! But alas, I got laid off.
The job market is horrible right now and I am sick to death of this corporate bullsh-t and office politics. Wondering if I should just hang it up now and retire, even though I’d like to save a bit more.
im s work to 65 and i think most will cause of the healthcare$$$$ ,unless they give a really good package ,otherwise i will stay and do as little as possible until im ready to go,theres very little work anyways..so just come to work ,you still getting a paycheck
@aa - @"Can't wait"
Boring, I was off for Thanksgiving and was climbing walls by week's end.
Goal is to work until my early 70's. We'll see though as a lot can happen along the way.
Yes…can’t wait
Yes, but the bank account says 'No!'
Also, health insurance is a ki-ler.
