Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

They never thought about the viability of teams

Most of these layoffs made zero sense. Some teams were cut down to the point where they can barely function, and what’s worse is that a lot of the experienced, genuinely skilled people were the ones let go. Now whole groups are missing critical roles, people who actually knew how to tie things together and solve problems because they’d built that capacity over time. It’s not just about losing headcount, it’s the quality we lost that hurts the most.

We lost a high performing passionate employee and kept the guy who has no desire to understand the work but is good at holding meeting after meeting where nothing gets accomplished.

This is nothing new. When 10,000 left in 2018 and another 5,000 in 2024/25, guess how many of those people were backfilled? Not many. With every RIF and VSP we lose a bit more institutional knowledge. Perhaps that's part of the reason the stock price is where it is. The company just wants you to do more with less. I suspect a lot of work will just stop, especially where there is really no value added.

You'd get more work done if you'd get off this site

When you get teams cut to 3 or 4 people then you lose critical mass…it only takes for one guy to go sick and another be on vacation and you got big problems

These layoffs were not surgical at all. It was a hatchet job. Someone on here (who had insight into the planning process for the layoffs - probably HR) has admitted that it was a rush job because the company had to file notices with certain states, etc. They were just looking to cut heads in a hurry in order to save money, without thinking about how the company would operate afterwards.

As someone else has posted, if the headcount and resources are not there, then don’t do the work.

Teams will just have to prioritize their work. If the headcount is not there than vertain work will not get done.

My team was lean to begin with. I was hoping I would be safe because I was actually covering for someone on maternity leave, but I got laid off anyway. The survivors will have to take on a lot more work … they will be stretched very thin, and the quality of work will suffer.
