Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

New CTO. Thoughts?

How do we feel about Jim Peichel as the new CTO? Seems like initial reaction is generally positive, but I don’t personally know anything about him.

The CTO role has been demoted off of ExCom. That tells you how important the voice of the CTO is to Geoff.

I'd say that this role is an impossible job at Medtronic, but it is not exactly clear what the CTO is meant to do at Medtronic beyond create visionary power points and give key note speeches.

You guys do realize that at Medtronic the CTO role was created in 2023 (technically Chief Technology and Innovation Officer) and that the CTO is not a member of the ExCom?

Listen, I like Peichel better for the role than Washington, but I don’t think anybody in the role is going to have the juice to impact the company’s direction like some posters on here think they do…

Robotics OU people have no credibility for what defines sufficient experience or education for technology. They have burned hundreds of millions on a project that still is a year away like its been for the last 8 years. They are in over their head designing something too complicated for their skills. I 've had enough of getting budget cuts and being told its to fund Hugo

Robotics OU people are having one big problem only. They are not liking anyone without PhD degree to become CTO

JP is a strong, talented and highly knowledgeable technical leader. So GM will never listen to him. He is intimidated by people who are smarter and more experienced than him.

He knows a lot about Medtronic, and technology, and he is generally trusted by technical staff, its a miracle Geoff hired him vs some outside wh-z kid from an unrelated industry like food delivery or solar or something.. I wonder if the pressure on Geoff from Elliot and the negative press about his revolving door of external hires finally had an impact.

Finally a good leadership decision after 5 years plus years. Jim will do very well until there is an “AND” in his title.

I’m just glad it wasn’t yet another external hire with no industry experience who lives nowhere near a plant. It was getting ridiculous.

He can finish big projects. We'll see if they give him a leash to chase down the real innovation.

Or he might just be a figurehead.

Peichel is a good leader who understands technology and innovation well. I say give him a chance.
