Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

To the people who were NOT laid off.

For everyone who was not affected from this RIF, I suggest you do not pick up any extra slack that puts you over 40 hours. Let jobs fail due to lack of resources. This is the only way for management to truly feel the pain or understand that we will need those people back where we were already spread thin to begin with. If you truly can’t get it all done in your time allotted then it will be on your manager and their manager to figure it out. That is literally their job.

@ry do you think the CEO change happening so fast without prior notice a good sign? Think again and he is only handing things off and will be gone eventually.

@rx

Again, I’m wondering why Hans, the one who made decisions that costed the company money, gets to stay in power at Verizon. If you do a bad job, you don’t get a bonus and retain a position of power, right?

I’m so tired of “it is what it is” excuses when people suffer. Wake up people.

Or keep being taken advantage of, if that’s your thing.

@rw RIF impacted leaders as well. I don't know if you were impacted or not but looking at the reorg chart you can clearly guess who got impacted. GNT went from 4 VPs to 3 and down the line AVPs consolidated as part or the restructuring and some went down to SD level. Multiple ADs got impacted as well. It is hard and never easy but that is corporate life

@rv I agree, so why are we not laying off the people who made the decisions that cost the company money like Hans?

Why are little people held to a higher standard than bigger people? If I ended up costing the company billions in lost revenue, I’d probably get sued, not get a bonus.

@rr what did you do as individual to prevent this from happening? It is easy to throw things under "leadership is what got it here" but we got to admit that there is some incompetence and people that does so little to get paid a decent salary. I know this will be unpopular opinion but it is FACT

@bd isn’t it more selfish to have 13,000 people laid off just before the holidays and corporate employees who ruined this company gets a raise?

It’s crazy how this thread has so much contempt for one and another, despite the choices were ultimately made by people who wouldn’t care to be in a place like here in the first place.

Remember, our leadership is truly what got us in this mess in the first place.

@qc Some people on this thread are misunderstanding OP.

OP is saying you should NOT pick up more work from the firings to show how irresponsible it is.

If you wanna burn yourself out with a company that sees you as a number, have all the fun you want.

Those who remain, good luck with the next RIF in a few months. Just remember your hard work and effort will go to people who run this company down to the ground. So please, don’t feel bad to focus more on yourself than this soulless company.

@OP & some other replies supporting </=40 hours max - you have to do what's required to "win in the marketplace."

If you're planning to keep working at Verizon with the lazyboy (or girl) attitude than don't complain when the layoffs continue and eventually claim your position.

@fe if they are hourly then that is fine but if you are salaried you know there are some days were you wok much less than 40 hrs. Just be professional and balance things out. Or be more efficient and do more stuff within the "working" hours. No reason to keep doing things in lengthy way unless you really don't want to challenge yourself and in that case you should be out. I have seen people doing things in long way rather than learning new skill to be more efficient

I don’t understand the rant against OP. All he/she says is do whatever is needed within 40hrs week. Don’t take anything extra. Why is it wrong? One needs to take care of their future and family. Even if survived employees work 60 hrs a week also there is no guarantee that they will not be riffed in next round. So, better they spend extra hours to lean a new skill which can help current job and their future job. @OP This is how you self identify for the next RIF. You can reason all you want that you have to teach the company a lesson, but the company does not even know hwo you are. Your boss does. Your boss will continue having to rank team members and then if/when the next RIF comes, give the relevant lowest ranked names.

I've been through a bunch of these over the years. I can say with 100% certainty that anyone with the op's mentality would force me to pick them because I know once we are post RIF, I need people that I can count on.

You can rationalize that however you want, but its just reality. Most of us have family and obligations, and the prospect of losing decent pay, benefits, and time off are just not worth gambling away.

The problem with specific number of people, and we all can name them if they are part of our teams, is exactly that attitude. We have people who do 3 times as much as others do, as my job is measurable, I can claim this. What I do not understand is why are they surprised when they get laid off? Why would a company keep someone who does 3 times less than someone else for the similar salary? Yes, many people have fears from being laid off, due to financial obligations. Therefore, they do much more, so the motiv is fear. Some are just competitive by nature, others just wish to do their best. But come on, three times less work means in my language, while I do the work, you take it easy. Well, guess what will happen when layoffs start looming around the corner?

The problem here is this post is selfish. Doing this would sc--w my team, it’s not just about me. I’m going to do what I can, I have a job to do. Why would I take a business decision so personally? I’m going to work and do what’s expected, granted I’m not going to work myself to death. But I’m going to do what’s necessary and right. What I get paid to do and support my team. “Be indifferent to what makes no difference” - Marcus Aurelius

This whole thread is honestly disturbing. OP’s delivery might be rough, but the message isn’t wrong. At some point we’ve got to stop letting companies squeeze us dry. They keep cutting resources but never the workload, and we just absorb it, terrified of being next on the chopping block.

This cycle has to break. But the reality is, for every one person who understands that, nine more will keep sacrificing their time, health, and sanity to the corporate gods for a paycheck and some benefits while the C-suite pockets millions and flies around on private jets.

understand why you say that but it's not the way...of course I don't work more than 40 unless I get paid no matter what..

the one survived would want to keep surviving. Refusing work would lead to possible lay off in the coming future..if you were in the shoe, you wouldn't want to let that happen..eh?

@b6 this is the mentality that got us here in this situation. VZ is struggling because of such laziness and people just doing what they have been asked instead of being proactive to do what needs to be done. Yes, there are other issues but if you want the company to succeed then you shouldn't promote such messages or tell the ones that are left to do so. Otherwise you should start looking for another job

In the end it is everyone for themselves. We all have to feed our families. I won’t risk my livelihood because YOU are mad about being let go. This many people leaving and I’m still here means I have a job until I’m ready to go.

Most management is suk a$$ so the will gobble up all that extra work. They would stab one another in backstabbing for a minute.Do you think for one minute managers are gonna try to make a stand.Their all gonna try to be the brightest shining star they can to stand out hoping to save their a$$ next round

That's a union mentality. But unfortunately none of these people are union. That's why they are in this situation to begin with. And then you get answers like I'm not risking my good paying job that selfishness breeds more selfishness. No risk or unity no reward i hope that that same person ends up doing the work of 3 people for their same salary, Then gets stressed out and and ends up with stress related diseases and divorced. If your stupid you should pay the ultimate price !!
