That YT guy has had previous videos talking about AT&T. Guess this time he chose not to call them out by name. AT&T peaked at 310k employees back in January 2008. Down to 140k as of January 2025. That number will probably go down to at least 130k when they next report it in late January 2026, which will be a reduction of 180k employees in 18 years (10k per year on average). T-Mobile has 70k employees and looks like Verizon will be down to 86.6k once you subtract the just announced 13k being let go. AT&T brings in slightly less revenue than Verizon and has more employees. Not a winning combination. So it looks like the company is going to be in forever layoff/surplus mode. Looking at the numbers, working for any of the big three is not the most secure place to work. The wireless market in the US has been saturated, so now it’s about cutting costs the most. Then there’s the generative AI stuff which is supposed to allow more automation. Depressing stuff, especially if you went to school for a long time (PhD) and focused your major in this area like I did.

Got rebadged into T in 99. It's been pretty much continuous since then. We had a break for a few years 2010ish where we didnt have to whack people.

I always said it was T's greatest talent. If only they could market it like George Clooney in Up in the Air. That movie is must see tv for AT&T.

So glad to be out of there.

Its funny they are hiring and laying off at the same time. One would think you could just shuffle the workforce around. But Its not about layoffs. Its a way to replace people with H1B's and lower paid employees.
