Telecom layoffs have been occurring regularly since the AT&T Bell System was officially broken up in 1982. That's nearly 45 years ago!

Working in telecom in 2025 is akin to working at McDonalds!

AT&T peaked at 310k employees back in January 2008. Down to 140k as of January 2025. That number will probably go down to at least 130k when they next report it in late January 2026, which will be a reduction of 180k employees in 18 years (10k per year on average). T-Mobile has 70k employees and looks like Verizon will be down to 86.6k once you subtract the just announced 13k being let go. AT&T brings in slightly less revenue than Verizon and has more employees. Not a winning combination. So it looks like the company is going to be in forever layoff/surplus mode. Looking at the numbers, working for any of the big three is not the most secure place to work. The wireless market in the US has been saturated, so now it’s about cutting costs the most. Then there’s the generative AI stuff which is supposed to allow more automation. You get the picture.
