Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Better laid off than PIPed

Honestly, I'd rather be laid off, at least that doesn't come with any stigma in this day and age and I get a severance as a nice safety net. When they start handing out PIPs indiscriminately it doesn't matter what you do and how hard you work, you're going to end up kicked out with nothing. And I think that's what's coming our way after layoffs. I've seen it happen in other companies.

For the record, I think it’s better to be laid, then laid off, or getting a pip.

At time of PiP you can request the severance package and Dell will generally grant it. It’s much less expensive for the company and less stressful for all.

I don't know where you got your info that you get severance when you're termed for a PiP, but a friend was fired this morning for failing a PiP, and was given no package. So, definitely not the same at least in ISG.

PIPs are nothing more than a sneaky way of companies forcing you out the door so they don't have to pay unemployment or give severances. In 2017 I was put on a PIP at Dell and they made it so incredibly difficult (it was more or less impossible) that my manager basically told me half way through that I likely wasn't going to pass it and he wouldn't blame me if I quit. He still paid me for 2 more pay periods tho.
Main reason I quit was because I wanted to go back to Dell in the future and a PIP is a mark against you in HR. Here I am, back at Dell as of 2019 lol

It seems like unions are the only protection against the harsh layoffs and the fear that they generate. UNIONS! Can you imagine the collective bargaining power?

@lrl+1kXSJ3Qu we had a guy PIPed a few years ago - he did nothing for a year and then fired. He got two weeks pay, no severance (except the year of salary he got for doing nothing.) So definitely not the same package as WFR.

I love PIP its a vacation known that fat severance is around the corner.

And yeah even on PIP you get the same severance package.
