Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

The tech job market is oversaturated

I didn't use to have any issues with the thought of being laid off because I always knew finding a new job would be relatively easy. Plus, a decent severance is always a plus. I don't feel that way anymore. Try applying for jobs now and see how many responses you get. Nowhere near what you might be used to, no matter how good you are. And that makes me scared of layoffs for the first time in a long while. I hope all the rumors turn out to be false.

same time I see plenty of amateurs pretending to be engineers and people that spent years doing what they were told without single unique idea for years.

for every 10 - there is 5 that companies could let go and would see a dent so yeh - it's not pretty to be in a mix with all these '5s"

The market is massively oversupplied and oversaturated. Even for many senior roles, there are hundreds of applicants. My advice, if I may, is to forget about the software development field for at least a decade.

Got cut from Services in Oct, and can't find a job in tech. For every tech job posted, there are 200 applicants within the first 30 min. It's not just ppl who have been recently laid off, you are competing with everyone who wants to jump ship before they get laid off. It's exhausting.

I agree that the tech market is saturated. It;s been that way for a long while. When I was laid off about 1 1/2 years ago, there were a number of openings for my skill set but companies were low balling the wage. Many of them thought that offering 100% remote justified a lower salary. I found a good position for less than what I had been making, but still within the ball park. Now, the listings are fewer and the perk of 100% remote has been replaced with "hybrid" or RTO. The wage level is still not where it should be. The problem today is the large number of workers on H!B that need a job to stay in the US. They will take a salary cut without much protest. That hurts all of us.
