Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Some people don't even know why they were laid off

People here are walking on egg shells in fear of becoming a target and losing their job. This kind of uncertainty and knowing that employee's hard work does not mean much creates mistrust and a very bad atmosphere in the company. Not giving the reasons why a person was laid off seems to be nothing unusual for this company. Anyone else who was a good performer and laid off without being given any reason why?

You are an at will employee, there doesn't need to be a reason. It's important to let that sink in and skill up accordingly.

You want a reason? Because hedge fund managers call the shots anymore... demanding our companies make unrealistic earning growth while providing nothing in return, truly a parasitic relationship

You want a reason? I'll give you several - How about you were not the most politically connected or adept, not the manager's favorite and finally not a URM. Technical skills and meritocracy do not count in the new "inclusive" Intel - differentiating people based on merit and job performance is now considered "discrimination". There are plenty of tech. companies (direct competitors of Intel) where meritocracy still matters, and they don't want to waste money on hiring URM's for no other reason than to fill a quota. You may find that you are happier over there. "It does not matter what you think your performance is or how many accomplishments you list on your review - it's my opinion that matters" - direct quote from a manager I used to work for.

Remember one thing. You come in to work with what you can offer and work hard. But it is a corporation and the people who work there are facades to manage the entity for profitability. The shareholders reward and punish the corporation. The corporation and its people respond to these string pulls. The corporations are not people even if they want you to believe in this to say "we are in this together". The people who work for the corporation are dispensable and are let go at will without much explanation or rationality. This is the unfortunate truth and I completely sympathize with how you feel about it. I hope you find better things elsewhere. But never forget that businesses are ruthless. Find something that's more meaningful and purposeful for your life. Who knows - that may even relieve you off this stress and offer some earning potential.

Sorry you got laid off. Instead of wasting your time and energy on being angry just move on and focus that effort on your job search. The reason why doesn’t really matter, it is not a negotiable situation. There is a better life outside of Intel.

People get laid off because the company believes the value it gets from the people are less than what the company is paying. The process of making that determination can be flawed and the decision could be wrong. However, the reason is always the same and you're not going to be able to argue with that. There's no point of giving any additional reason. What do you expect them to say? "You were picked because you're the 2nd highest paid person on the team, but your manager believes you're only the 5th best performer." They're not going to get into that level of detail for each individual. No company ever does that.
