Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Double standards frustrate me the most

Of the many managers I've had so far, only one didn't apply double standards to his employees. This is what frustrates me the most and defines what makes a manager a bad manager. Some employees who put in a real day's work for an honest dollar are almost invisible to managers, they simply do not recognize their hard work and dedication at all. On the other hand, for some, they are blind in one eye for all their slack.

There are 2 type of managers.

One type is the realist who see all the BS going on, powerless to change but does his/her best to protect the employees while getting work done.

The other type is the egotisical fool who utilizes every opportunity to boost his/her image in trying to get ahead. Couldn't careless about employees, working conditions, etc.

I'm a manager and there no nepotism putting up with whining, belligerent workers. Just do your job without drama. Sheesh.

Maybe the reason someone else got promoted because you are lazy and underperformed. Gonna blame it on cronyism and nepotism. Always blame someone else.

Managers in ATT are hired or promoted because of cronyism and nepotism, not skill set or ability to manage. That's mostly true in any very large corporation where you have thousands of employees with many layers of management. It's just one of those things that can't be avoided or prevented. Just the way it is and always has been.

ATT provides no training to new managers. A good mgr is not born with great mgmt skills, they are developed. At ATT, to be a good mgr it also helps to understand the work your subordinates are doing. If you develop mgmt skills and understand the work being performed you have the potential to be a good
Mgr. Unfortunately that is not the process at T. They promote and then the new mgr has to figure it out.

One has to wonder if we are dealing with policies designed by a committee consisting of Catbird, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, and some vogons....
