Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Forced Stack Ranking Question

Its an open secret now that there is a quota for performance ratings this year, similar to last. no 5s are allowed at all and there is a minimum number of 2s per team that must be allocated or senior leadership will draw names from a hat.

My question - Do any people leaders know if offshore team member's 2s count towards this quota? Our team is 18 offshore and 4 onshore. Would we be forced to lose another onshore person?

We used to have 9 onshore team members before this madness. any more onshore layoffs would mean we are on call and doing releases at night once every 3 weeks, which is insane. :( All the offshore folks are also at a university student level skill-wise, despite senior level titles, so they dont help with anything.

@cj , I would guess they don’t count in the rankings at least not until the meet the 80 20 goal. So far there’s only one layoff that I’ve heard of offshore. If you notice most of the layoffs are happening on shore. I think it’s the same with the stacked ratings. It’s a way to get rid of onshore people. So is forcing RTO, even for those that I’ve never been in the office ever The bottom line that I’ve realized over the last couple years is they don’t really care about their employees Forcing someone into a 2 who is not a 2 is abusive in my opinion. Once you are a two, you won’t be able to get a job anywhere else in Optum or UHG. Essentially once they give you that 2 they’re destroying your career at the company .

2s go to people mgmt doesn’t like. Your work quality doesn’t matter. It’s nothing but backstabbing and gossip. Management is unqualified and inexperienced. Don’t come to work here.

Every org is a little different. My org has a few 5s this year to give out so it isn’t 0 people it is just very few.

Yes, offshore counts in terms of the distribution. I know that some VPs look at distributions based on grades. For example they mandated that all grades matched the curve meaning a certain amount of grade 26s needed to be 2,3,4,5 and same with 27 and 28. It would not surprise me if they have a chart that does the same for onshore and offshore distributions but I personally have not seen that in my org.

Can only speak for my team (manager here) We have people in multiple locations. All employees, including India and Philippines, count in our stack ranking.

20 bucks says in the Philippines they have no ranked anything. As long as they're breathing and at the computer they're fine. They could be cheating the system at their job making a cr-p and they won't get fired. I've literally witnessed someone working off the clock in the Philippines and not getting paid for it but it's okay. This individual would apparently work over 16 hours sleep just 8 hours and that was their existence. I brought this to their management's attention and the person still here. Upper management doesn't care if our offshore Philippines people lie about things and make mistakes it's just swept under the rug and You're told to ignore it. But if the situation happened in the States you are gone no ifs ands or buts. The company looks for anyone to lay off that's not in their executive suite or upper management buddy list. You could have built the best application of this company from the ground up and then within a few years they find some cheap labor person who can just look at some script and copy what you did and not actually make any improvements but they get the job because they getting paid $5 an hour.
I'm not going to cry over the company laying me off I'm going to cry over the uncertainty about My family's well-being and me being able to find a job that pays what I was at least making here.

Over my 35 year career in IT, I have never come across a company (at least what I have witnessed in IT) that has and still does mismanage their employees.
The pure bullsh*t that they spew out is unbelievable! One year, in my review, I received 3's and 4's. I insisted to my manager that my years work reflected 4's and 5's. He agreed, but told me that upper management (Brian S. CIO Corporate Systems) told mid management that 4 and 5 ratings were now 3 and 4. I informed my boss I was ok with that as long as I was being judged on my actual performance.
Which he said I was and was very pleased with my work.
HOWEVER, when it came to pay increase and bonus, my performance was treated as a regular 3 and 4!
By far the most underhanded company I have ever been associated with!

oh man, stack ranking is the worst.
your ratings MUST match a bell curve regardless. The goal of it all is to 'force' turnover which also implies that getting new blood is ALWAYS good.
So if you had a high performing team of all 'A' players, your stack ranked review of the team forces you to pick 1 or 2 that are the lowest performers, and 1 or 2 that are the highest.
The lowest performers usually are not allowed to apply and transfer out of the team (they can only 'quit' the team (and the company) -- forced turnover).

As time goes on some places, like microsoft, and others, result in folks purposely hiring who they perceive as low performers so they protect the ones they know they want to keep.
I believe this was started by Jack Welch in his GE days.
Microsoft, Cisco, Amazon, and other tech companies follow this. its a morale ki-ler.

If your manager is also offshore, and you're onshore, you're going to get shafted. Just the way things are.
