Thread regarding Elevance Health (Anthem) layoffs

Advice?

Starting a new role with the company for a senior position, I’m expected to be in office since I am near one of the pulse points.. what’s some advice you would give for someone starting off with the company and things you feel like your manager won’t tell you?

Does my screen need to be awake all day when wfh?

Start looking for another job at another company. Preferably not in the healthcare industry.

@qa Agreed!! You’d have to have a double-digit IQ to believe the OP is actually a senior level person, especially with a ridiculous post like that.

OP, the things that your manager won't tell you is that many employees here have some sort of personality disorder or mental illness, and you'll feel like you're working in an insane asylum most days. You'll have to learn how to tune these people out because that kind of illness is contagious. There's also rampant harassment including s3xual that no one wants to do anything about. Maybe they are waiting for a class action lawsuit. Always put yourself first and take your lunch and breaks because like others have commented this co does not care about you or your well-being.

Quick PSA:

Please be cautious when answering these new series of seemingly separate posts where someone wants to know about joining the company.

This is social engineering. It's probably internal.

@gd is right. NO ONE cares. Really feel bad for the people that sacrificed their health and families for this inimical cesspool.

@bz This company is far from perfect, but this person is totally out of their mind. Don’t listen to this cyborg.

@dz this is such a weird post by the OP -

if you are salaried you will be expected to work until it's done - if it takes you more than 8 hrs no one cares - if you work late into the night to finish a project - no one cares. If you are "staff" you may work over 8 to meet a metric - and again no one will care.

the common theme should be obvious - no one cares -

If you're salaried you're paid to be available 8 hours a day, not to necessarily work 8 hours a day. My direct bosses have always said the same thing.

This seems like one of those “don’t feed the trolls” type posts.

This is a strange post from someone in a "Senior" position. I'm guessing it's more of a Senior Manager and not Senior Leadership.

I think this is HR or SLT executive posting something fake to justify a company-wide RTO 3 days a week or more. They can say “ see people WFH don’t want to work”. People WFH actually do more work. This is a stupid question. Of course you are expected to be online during working hours unless you’ve notified manager of appointment.

@cd you're recently the second person to ask this sort of question when hired for a Senior role.

This may come as news to you, but it's an anonymous site, so it isn't easy to figure out who is posting what a second or third time for reassurance.

The fact that people are being hired here and seem to want to know right off the bat if they can be unavailable and get away with it when working remotely is ridiculous.

@bj I actually haven’t posted before…hence why I’m asking.

Here are some tips -
NO errand running without prior approval from you manager -
If you have a MD appt make sure you have advised your manager of such in advance. I would do it via email and ask if there is any impending conflict that he/she feels you should change your date or time or let them know this is the only date/time available
Expect to eat at your desk, be prepared for any IM "are you available"? All the time - it's the way things are.
Breaks - yes at your desk - a break is no one bothering you - but you are available if they need to.
I wear a crossbody bag when I am in the office, I have a bag I bring to the bathroom - it holds my mouse, keyboard and anything else I think is important - yes you will be eventually ripped off - this is my second keyboard. Have your own snacks and drinks nearby.
Bathroom - make it snappy - be on "be right back" - IM''s will be endless.
And remember there will be constant "emergencies" hence the endless IM.
Remember to lock your screen if you leave your computer even for a few minutes.

Good luck - I'm sure it will be a blast

You will be expected to be a "yes" person. You'll be forced to overwork staff, forced to agree to anything your higher ups tell you, forced to agree to all sorts of wrong and unreasonable deadlines which trickles down. You'll be involved in decisions to do customers out of needed and correct care because the company wants to save money. You'll be expected to reduce overheads and workforce every quarter, you'll be on call 24/7 and everything is a fire drill. I'm sorry you were buffaloed into thinking this was a good company to work for. It will be very stressful and wake you at night in cold sweats--you need to know this WILL happen. They won't tell you that. Burnout at all levels here is real. Keep your resume up to date and look to get out as soon as possible.

I would say your screen does not need to available all day, but almost all day.

Take breaks and eat lunch and go to the bathroom, just as you would if you are at a corporate office. If you need to run a quick errand (like pick up the dry cleaning next to your house) during when you normally would each lunch, that shouldn’t be an issue. There’s not the expectation that you would be glued every second to your chair and not take healthy breaks and go to the bathroom and not eat anything.

But don’t be annoying and not available when someone is expecting to talk to you. Just say I am about to grab lunch and I can meet in 30 mins at this particular time and I’ll ping you when I am free. Be communicative.

Haven't you posted before?

It's work. Sit at your computer the full duration of your shift, even when working from home. There are already enough problems with some people being chronically unavailable. Don't make them worse by starting here with that attitude.
