Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Anyone GT that got laid off in June have luck finding a job? It’s really bad out there. Need some hope.

The job market is really bad out there, but I know a few folks from the June round that have found jobs. Some local, some remote. Let the things you've got deeper experience with be your differentiator, and focus on applying to jobs that need those things. People selling themselves as generalists are not having a good time right now.

@nh - That's not entirely accurate. Portland has never been a tech hub, and it lacks the deep talent pools that tech hubs with similarly sized populations have. There are also several characteristics that those cities have that Portland just will never have: geographic location, large airports, larger populations, major universities, etc.

I can't imagine how much money and how long it would take to push Portland or Oregon there. It takes more than bribing a business or two with tax incentives to get there. Denver is a really good example of what it would take to become a tech hub - they've been working for that since the 60s and just got there recently.

If you were laid off and took the severance package, the coaching is called "Right Management Outplacement Services." It should be listed in your severance summary letter, in the End of Employment FAQs, and there should have been a flyer for the service in your documents. From the FAQs:

"Per your severance summary, you are eligible for NIKE, Inc.-paid outplacement
services through Right Management. Refer to your severance summary for the length of
services you are entitled to. Services can be activated after you have signed your
severance agreement, and the revocation period has passed. You must activate
services no more than 90 days after your termination date. Right Management can be
reached at www.right.com/getstarted or call 866-319-1690."

(The termination date is the day you dropped off the Nike payroll. Therefore, if you got laid off in June and fell off the Nike payroll in September, you'd better get moving on signing up if you want to use this service. For me, the videos and coaching calls were helpful. Why not use the extra help if it's free? BTW, it takes a few days to get set up once you enter the info on their site.)

To answer the OP question, I was laid off in May and got a job in September. Fully remote, doing the same thing as I did at Nike. Slightly less base pay.

I didn't start seriously looking until I applied for unemployment in August. I also did the coaching Nike provided as part of the package. That helped me narrow down exactly what I wanted and tailor my job search for that specific role. Perhaps I was just lucky, but I had interviews at several companies and chose the remote role.

It's a tough market, but there are jobs out there. My advice is to not be a generalist jack-of-all-things, but really narrow down into what you do best and market yourself towards that.

there is no plan from Portland city leaders to improve the biz env, just tax more and waste all tax money

it's in a downward spiral....they only positive thing is the physical location and people with money from other like minded cities move here...... it's going to be the city in the US with biggest wealth gap, ignorant people and a blinds eye to reality, just a weird place

2024 alumni. Took me 8 months to land fully remote role. Job market seems much worse today. I’m not sure Portland’s plan to be more biz friendly, but needs to happen soon.

Check out CA start-ups. Some good opportunities. Many have only a few days in the office. Commute if you have to keep your main location in OR.

OP - The market is very bad but there are pockets where hiring is going on. Think small, medium firms. You’ll need to adjust your expectations for salary and stock options. You may need to move out of Oregon. Move to areas that has more jobs - Dallas, Seattle, Atlanta, California, East Coast. Oregon is dead.
