Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

What happens next?

This is my first time witnessing a layoff. I recently graduated college and just joined the job market lol. I was lucky and got to keep my job but I’m having a very hard time getting back to work and “prepping for peak”. Do we really just have to go back to working like nothing happened? And specially during the busiest season? Surely they thought about how this + the production freeze would decrease productivity….

@OP "Do we really just have to go back to working like nothing happened?"

Yes. It's called being an adult with a job.

@a3 An 8% cut doubles the workload? 1/2 of you guys wouldn't make it at the store level.

@OP they didn’t lay you off because they’re going to exploit you with more work and no extra pay.

You don't have to pretend like nothing happened. Productivity will likely be affected for weeks, and there's almost certainly going to be disruptions in new work suddenly given to you.

People will be nervous, worried, concerned about another round in 2026, etc. You never know... it might turn out to be good for some, and likely bad for others.

Use the time to your advantage. Figure out of Target is somewhere you want to be now.

Let's face the facts, there were simply too many people. No stores closing, business doesn't miss a beat, simply said the number of people wasn't needed.

This isn't just paying for nothing, it is a business for profit.

Hard pill to swallow, but true.

Don't under estimate how quickly Target will move on from "this is a really difficult day" to " we need to prep for Q4 and delight the guest for peak!" More expectations and work will be added and your merit increase will result in a measly 1% citing difficult economic conditions...

If the company continues to not perform expect more. If they turn things around everyone will be high fiving again about how great Target is to work at.

There will be a few non productive days, some pushed deadlines, and Q4 will still happen whether we are prepared or not. There will be some damage due to things that are being executed late, but not a show stopper. Just make sure not to work yourself to the ground because areas that were deemed necessary to execute for peak will have additional cuts after

Priorities will shift to keep core things afloat. Focus on making sure you're not being given too much work - keeping that boundary will be a learning curve for you as a new grad, that even experienced people struggle with. Everyone is in the same boat. The market is sh-t for new grads but keep your resume up to date, network when you can, and leave when you feel like you've got all you can from your current role.

What happens next is you get to do the job of 2, get a cr-ppy performance review and a bad bonus because “we’re in difficult times.” It su-ks. Hard to be motivated
