Thread regarding Teradata Corp. layoffs

I just started a new role at a major government entity. Our team will be putting together a Data Warehouse, ETLs, and reports for multiple entities/teams.

We wont be using Teradata. Not because Im being petty after being layed off. Although this is partially the reason why. But technically Snowflake and Databricks are just better options and are getting to the point that they're industry standard for new Data installs.

I come here for entertainment. I cant believe Teradata is bringing Unity back. That software has the most amazing ability to lose customers. I dont think Teradata even understands what new potential customers want or need.

@1db so you're saying that all the hires to RB are going to be let go of in 4 years? I'm sure TD could shift them around as priorities change. I've seen like 6 new people and at least 4 of them were unity

@1db Be careful or you’re going to upset super-engineer.

@1bf
Thats exactly what people said before Unity blew up in their faces which is why it was mothballed before.

Sales likes to sell the Unity story

Dev thinks they can fix all the bugs

A big customer installs Unity and it fails in the most mission critical way possible and Teradata looses another big customer who doesn't trust the solution.

Those who dont remember the past are doomed to repeat it. Not that I really care but this is exactly what business end up doing when they layoff everyone with product knowledge. Youre going to hit all the same issues and probabaly in 4-5 years cancel Unity again. (If Teradata is still in business 4-5 years from now)

@193 Unity is definitely scaling up they hired a few devs in RB to come and support it so I'm pretty sure it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Unity is an excellent product that's mission critical to keeping our customers protected. If Unity is gone Teradata is gone

Still in use. Patch and maintenance for last/current version only. Support is available. It is all about life with occasional work, for the few people still attached to it. Enjoy while it lasts.

Who would have thought that on a site called The Layoff that there would be negative comments?

@11You forgot to mention the the shills on layoff, the shills that logon to "slander" RIF'd employees.

Teradata Unity? They resurrected that tu-d? Ha! Let me tell you some info on why Unity was buried before. It sounds like the ultimate solution. Sales likes to sell the story and it basically allows customers to double up on their current investment. Here's where it falls appart. It's ridiculously complicated to keep multiple sites A and B in 100% sync 24/7. Its so complicated that you need to throw a large number of dev bodies at it to makes things function. But wait theres more.... If ANYTHING goes wrong in highly complicated mission critical Unity it will fail. Once Unity fails (which will happen) you lose customers trust and they start looking for alternatives. Developers love Unity because they always think they can fix problems. But developers dont get canned when Unity blows up and they dont get to experience the loss of customers when things fail. They just try to fix the problem in an update. The problem is there's unending updates to release.

@111 I'm on a different project than that other guy but I can also agree with that poster in saying that Teradata is still a nice place to work. I also am commenting less here because people are calling me names for doing my job and doing it well on this board. Everything together thelayoff.com really isn't an ideal place to judge a company by it's just doomers all congregating to slander a company

@10m I'm on unity and the work life balance is excellent to this day and the entire team is in the USA. Not sure that I'm stressed about my role I've been here for two years. I hope things get better for you but I think the culture and WLB at Teradata is still incredible

Where is super-engineer to tell us and those laid off in EMEA everything is simply superior at Teradata?

All of the previous layoffs have left us overworked and exhausted, trying to get up to speed on all of the knowledge sent out the door. We’re constantly stressed trying to figure out when our department will be the next one to be outsourced or laid off. It’s just too much. TD used to be a great company to work, but now it’s a damned if you do or damned if you don’t environment because it’s not about the people, it’s about the numbers.

HRBP, appreciate your candor. No apology necessary. Anonymous forum. Stick to truth, kinda lie, somewhat distort the information you may not have access to. Your choice. Then why bother? Well, should I start preparing for the holidays or should I wait for few more days? Should we get a head start with the lights and joy? Average Joe, unassuming Jane are trying to measure the runway. Much like you are.

Oh, it is not a tough situation, no drama please. Working at td means being ready at all times. F%*kMillan knows excel and ppt. Got nothing to do with product or solution. So we dont care either.

Sorry to hear about the EMEA. No, really sorry that you are going through the maze. At least you are over with it. I have been trying to get a new role, will keep trying.

@wk

If HR and management are not monitoring this board in some way, it shows how clueless they are about the internals of the company.

@tp no one in upper management or HR is monitoring this board. I'm also here on my own time just to share what I know to help ease any nerves, my intentions aren't malicious. I am on your side not corporates

@j2 I understand that this is a tough subject, but I genuinely mean it when I say this there is no immediate layoffs planned in November. There always is some heads up that we do get when layoffs are looming, and I haven't heard anything happening in the next few weeks. If I am wrong I do apologize I don't intend to intentionally mislead anyone here.

To the HR Business Partner who was generous to identify their role with comforting and calm-assuring message. Are you going to correct yourself now and update us with newly found information? There is a history of HR and Back Office not knowing what they are talking about, just trying to be polite. Nov 17-18th it is or not? Don't worry you will have more time to correct yourself again and again.

@ds that would bring marketing HC down to CT and a rag tag crew of a handful or two. Teradata Marketing was never really anything to write home about but at least now they have an excuse.

Engineering is constantly present, HR is here, marketing stops by, sales folks is sure to miss Q4 deals, EMEA represented, left china yet chineese are still buying new. Missed anything? Oh yes, when is the next layoff? Likely in few days, if not January otherwise March. Definitely not February.
