I started my career late in life. Been here for 5+ years. I was offered another position with another company. Unfortunately this company has layoffs like many others in our sector. Not sure if I should accept it or just remain here. If you had the change to move on would you? Or would you remain here due to the amount of time you've put in? Also, pay and benefits are about the same.

Sandeep came from Pure.
At VMware Explore in Barcelona, Sandeep dropped off his bags at the NetApp booth, crossed the aisle to the Pure booth, and hung out with them for about 5 minutes. Then walked back to our booth, picked up his bags, and went to the VIP area.
When he was out of sight, a woman from the pure booth walked over and said "Sandeep is with you now, huh? Good luck"!
True story: Pure does not just let go of leaders they see as valuable; they push them out, and NetApp hires them with a bump in position.
@1ns Sorry for being late to the party. I worked at NetApp for 15 years. Saw good times and bad. That is the world we live in. S, should you move on or not? I left a company to go to NetApp, I left because I hated the culture. NetApp has it's cultural issues, good and bad. Work is a place to earn money, hopefully at a job you love, so that you can live life. Don't let your job define who you are.
Regarding growing revenue, NetApp will not grow again unless it enters a new market where there is a vacuum to fill. Today, GK is turning the crank and profits are growing very nicely. As a long time shareholder, I could not be happier. If you cannot mentally get on board with how the company is moving, that would be a good reason to leave.
But remember - there is no security in this world. Live simply without crushing debt, and personal and economic downturns can be weathered. (It works!)
@1vb You can be a mediocre manager at Pure and then come to NetApp and be a Vice President. It's happened now at least 3 or 4 times....
Fastest way to get a promotion is working a year or two at Pure…
@1m2 This is 10000% true. When was the last time we saw a director get promoted to VP?
We keep hiring PURE rejects as VP positions all over the company instead of promoting from within.
Amazing the Board can't see that GK, Selfie King, and RDB have done absolutely nothing to raise our revenue numbers.
NetApp job levels have a range of salaries associated with them, and managers have discretion on how to allocate a pool of raises they can assign to individual performers. In theory this lets the manager recognize high performance. In practice it can result in pet awards and favoritism in certain teams that lead to dysfunction and breakdown.
There is a preference for external candidates who will always be preferred for promotional positions. Internal candidates who would otherwise meet criteria for promoted positions are prohibited from promotion. This sends good people out the door.
There is a reason you were looking in the first place. Staying is not going to fix that. Money isn't everything...
NetApp layoffs as much as any other company. I'd go for the bag and make sure your saving for if dire times happen
Since everyplace is laying off ask yourself would this other position improve your skills, making you more valuable.
It is a tough decision. Netapp overpays, at least in RTP, making it difficult to leave if money is your primary concern.
I spent six years at Cisco in RTP and the twice a year layoffs in good times made it a hellhole. That said it was a better group, and I learned a lot more than I ever did at NetApp.
Don't change jobs unless there is a decent improvement in benefits. You are risking a known (job) for an unknown of the same.
Staying because of time put in? Absolutely not. That is loyalty and do not give any company this. You get significant pay bumps by changing jobs.
Say to your new potential employer it isn't worth the risk to change jobs with the offer they made. If they can increase on your current position by 25% then that would probably be worth it. Otherwise stay put, keep on applying for jobs and waiting for any RSUs vest.
