Thread regarding VISA Inc. layoffs

People need to learn what a layoff actually is

A layoff happens when your job role is no longer required by the company or is being restructured.
Being laid off does not mean your performance has been poor, but poor performance makes it less likely for you to find another role internally.

On the flip side:

Being fired due to poor performance is not a layoff…… it’s being fired for poor performance.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

@b1 you're probably next in line. No amount of "hard work" is going to keep you safe from getting fired for a fake NS/NS. Hope your brown nosing hard.

@d7 agreed. I recieved a NS with a vague reasoning and that is a setback.

Age definitely matters, all of a sudden a facility guy or a HR personnel can't learn python, coding and ML and get productive in AI soon. It definitely can be learnt but takes some time. If that is a vague reason to give poor performance, then we'll, management needs to learn well. People wants to grow too but that room and guidance should be driven by leaders.

Visa has been "re-organizing" people out to avoid filing WARN notices since March 2023. The only reason they filed the one for 1400 people is because someone went to the WSJ about their shady practices.

With regard to people receiving NS ratings, I know of people that were never told during the fiscal year that they weren't performing up to the standard of Strong and given a chance to improve. Visa requires managers to put people in certain categories to keep the budgets as low as possible. 2 NS ratings and you are out . . . yet they are giving these people 30 days of pay?? People that are fired don't get 30 days of pay.

Forcing managers to give out bad ratings to a minimum number of people regardless of whether it's deserved, and then using the undeserved bad ratings as an excuse to fire those people while avoiding severance, is a layoff in disguise. It's no different than the companies telling remote employees that if they don't relocate and come into an office within the month then the company will take it as the employee quitting. The employee did nothing wrong. The company wants to be cheap and pretend they aren't cutting heads. Downvote if it makes you feel better but anyone saying those being let go because of an NS deserved it are bootlickers.

@b1 If you are a “bare minimum” employee, you should expect to be fired or laid off. In this current job market, there is not much difference.
The reality is that managers are required to adhere to the bell curve. If you have two NS ratings, prepare your resume.
Visa is now a company governed by MBA’s who do not care about you or your loyalty. If you are not contributing to shareholder value, say goodbye and good luck.

Yarsh a lot of the low performers think the company will pay them severence to leave as if they will reward them for being useless Hahaha

They find out eventually that being fired for NS/NS is not the same as being laid off.

@a4 Dude covered this.
Performance may put you in the firing line if your job role or location is up for restructure but you don’t get “laid off” purely for performance.

Source: I got fu--ing laid off this time last year, my job role no longer exists.

Pretty simplistic. In addition, many factors are involved in a layoff including age (never admitted by HR), performance, salary, location, etc. Not so great Ted talk.
