I’m a leader overseeing
multiple product teams, and after reading through many message boards, I’ve been forced to confront an uncomfortable truth: most of the criticisms of Target’s leaders aren’t unfair.
Though I’d hate to be without a job, and am hopeful that I’ve had an overall positive impact on my team, l can’t deny that leaders like myself won’t be the ones to get us back on track. It will be the super ICs that understand what success looks like in this new, post-pandemic world.
Since taking this job, it feels like all of my energy has been spent on survival. I see my peers struggling with the same thing. They are distracted by the politics of HQ, and staying in the game has become more important than winning the game.
Some of the ideas I’ve seen presented by our teams would have collectively put us back into competition, but they have been unrealized because we couldn’t see or understand the vision.
We are afraid to be bold for fear of failure, and are often consumed by choosing the right decision that makes those above us happy.
We ignored the ICs that told us to do better. I’m sorry that I couldn’t have made more of those good ideas happen.
I hope Target puts its future in better hands.
