Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Finding a new role

I wanted to create a thread so we can help each other with some advice on finding new roles. I’m in tech, and obviously the job market is worst it’s ever been. I stay up on certifications, education, and all that. Doesn’t seem to help a lot. Even did nano degrees here. Been trying to do LinkedIn and network, been applying to jobs for about 2 years now and only had a handful of interviews, got passed up for internal candidates on the final rounds. Anyone having luck getting interviews coming from ATT and if so, what methods are you using (mainly networking, job boards, etc…). Any particular companies you find folks getting jobs at coming out of here?

Let’s help each other find something else.

@a1 per Whitehouae there are 8 millions jobs that need to be filled. AT&T has 1.7 k job opportunities in US. So is the problem there’s no jobs or there are no qualified candidates?

You 'suggest removing ATT from your resume'.
The company, regardless of your personal biases, is ranked #37 in the Fortune 500 list in 2025. And, frankly, still highly valued.
This poster's suggestion to remove it from your resume is mo--nic and ill advised. He has no clue what he's talking about!

A 'gig' is actually a hipster's term typically used to describe short term temporary work for people like musicians.
No one working in corporate uses that term to describe their position as a 'gig' .,, unless they want to sound 'cool'.
People get jobs and are assigned specific roles and responsibilities.

Or,
Stop calling it a job ... Those kinds of HR hipster buzzwords are an immediate tell ... that create more problems than you solve. It is a gig. Go download one.

Many of the jobs you see already have pre-selected candidates for the role. They have to post the opening though. My best advice is get an internal referral before you apply and networking. Go to local networking events in your industry and it will help you find the "off market" jobs, the ones that have not made it to the job board yet. Job market is horrible right now. Good luck.

I agree except this guy is not 'hip' and probably has no clue what community theatre is. He's 'pulling the chain' in this board. He's a plain old troll.

Stop calling it a role. You are not playing pretend at the community theater. Those kinds of HR hipster buzzwords are an immediate tell that you are not serious about your career and probably create more problems than you solve. It is a job. Go get one.

Having AT&T on your resume is a black eye. I suggest removing AT&T related experience before applying.

A few things that helped once I did them, as I’m over 45 and wasn’t having much success.

  1. On your resume: show no more than 15 years max of job experience, if you can limit to 10 even better. Remove dates from graduations and certifications if they are older than 5 years. Workday and other programs are filtering older candidates. Saw this posted on LinkedIn as something to try and I’ve gotten more responses as a result.
  2. Apply as soon as you can to the posted date, same day works best, be early in the list before it gets flooded.
  3. Network network network - reach out to people you know, have worked with etc. a referral on your application helps. Try to get around the HR screens.
  4. If you have grey hair - color it. If you are overweight or out of shape, work on dropping some pounds. Update your style, wear a nice outfit that is current. Yes it all matters, you want to look younger and dress more current. Tech jobs want youthful people.

Good luck, it’s rough out there right now.

You've got to take T off your profile and resume. Your resume is being filtered out as soon as it hits the screening algorithm. You're going to have better luck relaying on just your certifications and training record.

You're misinformed. Who you are is quite transparent to everyone. You're fooling no one. But keep giving yourself those pep talks.

It is an undisputed fact that job applicants other than straight white males have hiring advantages for many reasons. With that fact understood, straight white males must not complain or talk about this and simply accept this as part of the challenge in finding a new job. Remaining focused and positive is key to demonstrating that you will be well worth hiring.

Stop blaming your failures on DEI and H-1B candidates.
Perhaps you simply lack the skillset, intellect and possibly the instinct that you are just not a good fit.
Consider self reflection.

Running out of ideas. Too experienced, not-experienced - heard it all. Certification helped score few additional interviews, but no offer. HCOL city. Asked few recruiters in the first call if they were actually hiring. 100% of those recruiters went silent, as if their feelings were hurt. Cannot retire, cannot ask for referral. Went to job fair, applied online.

The job market is absolutely in the gutter. That’s due to FAR too many “candidates” in the pool. Whether it be H-1B usurpers, DEI candidates or AI pipe dreams, there is (also) hyper-inflation in the job pool. This will not get any better…bank on it.
