Thread regarding U.S. Bank layoffs

Why does ambition only get you in trouble here?

The higher-ups only care about keeping things the same and maybe promoting a few kissasses. Everybody else is just out of luck.

There have been some pretty good answers already. Managers have fragile egos. The "fake it until you make it. Lie until you die" culture is very common in management. An honest and ambitious subordinate can make the manager look bad despite having no intention of doing so.

Kiss-as--s are going to what it takes to make the manager look good. I believe that they will even lie if doing so benefits the manager.

My career advice is to shut up if you are not the chosen one. Do the right thing; not what the slogan "Do the right thing." means in practice. Stay good and document your interactions with people. Your ethics might rub off on your co-workers and consequently managers. Many managers are like chameleons.

@ep could not agree more! The good leaders ran when they saw the writing on the wall.

My manager actively seeks unhappiness in all employees. Everyone needs to be completely miserable all the time.

The management/leadership is mostly trash. The good ones or the ones who showed a shred of integrity have either been forced out or left on their own. You only have safety here if you are someone’s favorite, or you were hired by them because you worked together at your last employer (cronyism abounds). Don’t even get me started about the idolization of 20 somethings here, so that they can ultimately be abused for low pay. The company realizes it’s the young ones that leave quickly, right? Terribly toxic corporate enterprise. Disgraceful.

Being able to jam your head deep inside your boss's behind is critical. Sticking your tongue out while talking this action gets you an instant promotion. Innovative, dedication, creativity, is frowned on. Management will do everything possible to extinguish happiness and pride. This is an awful place to spend your career.

The problem is a self promotion/self protection leadership culture, as talent, capability and proven success and ability are a threat to the layers of incompetent leadership in place throughout the bank and its affiliated entities. The bank wants leaders that can be controlled, not leadership that can lead large teams and deliver revenue and results, such that you have significant stagnation, no measurable growth and leadership that is confined to buzzwords and corporate jargon rather than sitting on a growing, expanding and in demand banking and payments franchise. Mediocre leadership, mediocre growth and results.
