Is favoritism by your manager common in your teams? Its happening in mine, and is very frustrating because the manager decides to defend this one team member by taking their side all the time. How do you navigate such situations?

Limerick has always been a buddy network. Good luck to you, no matter how talented or hard working if you're not part of it.
@a6 or maybe just being in the same community/ location as your manager while rest of the team is at another location. Easier to connect and keep getting attention.
Agree networking is just as, if not more important than, ability, work ethic, and being a team player. However, if the rest of Dell Technologies is the same as Limerick IT, where the local cartel, which includes the site IT leads, has been constantly canvassing their overrated relations and friends and blatantly ostracizing respected engineers who are major contributors in their global teams, then surely Dell wants to have an authoritarian management
Have a word with your boss please. Put this mo-o against the wall. Don't let anger build inside of you.
@cg same here ISG
@c8 you completely misunderstood what I meant by being a top performer. I was the junior in the team, far from being an arrogant “expert”. I had the most cases in my bin. I got on very well with everyone.
Now I have zero tasks for today for example. Two weeks ago I had ZERO tasks for the whole week. I’m doing absolutely nothing and still getting paid for no fault of my own. I just think that my boss wants me out!
I’ve built solid reputation with many other people. It’s my current boss who has issues with me for no valid reason. The only reason is he listened to rumours about me from the saboteur. Workplace mobbing is REAL! I wish you to never be in such situation!
People misconstrue being a "top performer" and one who's easy to work with and one whos easy to get along with.
Just because someone is a "top performer" doesn't mean jack if they are unliked by most and are very difficult to work with. I've known plenty of top performers who have been let go simply because they are a pain in the a$$ to work with, are arguementative and have the "my way or the highway" mentality.
A manager is ALWAYS going to have their favorites on their team. Doesn't matter if they are or aren't a top performer. I'd argue that if you are well liked, easy to work with/get along with, and a good employee... you are far less likely to be let go than the expert who is a total dooshbahg.
When I first started at dell, it was me and one other person whom were hired on under a manager and, all 3 of us were brand new to the FED environment. This was 6 years ago and our team has since grown quite a bit however, me and this other person are and always will be my managers "OG." We are all pretty tight and close to each other, and we both happen to be his top performers year after year.
What began as a team of 2, has now become a 13 person team. Though, of those 13 ppl we are all split into different technology segments. So, my group is 6 people now and I'm an OG. I drink that kool-aid like it's water and brown nose, su-k up, etc... but I'm also GREAT at my job. There is a reason why I've never had a raise below 7% in the last 6 years and a reason why I had a 12% raise last year.
Doesn't mean I'm "safe" by any means but, I 100% know that me and this other person are last on the list to get laid off if push came to shove.
I've also made an effort to become friendly with a LOT of sr. managers over the years. Along with consultants, directors, and normal IC's. I have a solid reputation to say the least.
My point is that "favortism" is not a dell thing. It's at EVERY company. He-l, it's how life works, actually! That's just how life works. Especially in a corporate environment.
I mean, this isn't a Dell thing by any means. It's a life thing.
This is straight up politics and as some would say "drinking the kool-aid" is what you need to do. You either do it, or you don't. THose who do are going to be more favored than those who don't. AKA those who do, are the "su-k ups" and are more than willing to take on tasks. Those who don't, well... I hate to tell ya but, you won't ever be a favorite.
My advice is to always "drink the kool-aid" even if you hate it.
God you think Dell is bad Amazon promotes bullies that is their culture plain and simple. Disgusting they think it helps with ingenuity bs. Nothing but backstabbing bs. Trust me I know alit of people over there just an bad place to work
@ay oh boy! sorry that it has impacted you so much. A positive environment is essential for productive work.
Big time over here too! In my previous team I was the top performer.
In my current team I’m the lowest one. Mainly because work is not being assigned to me and I fell out with my manager over a mistake that they made. They have a couple of favourites in the team and one of these favourites is a backstabbing saboteur.
I was dealing with mobbing and I took an extended sick leave because of that. During this sick leave I was sent to see a mental health practitioner. This counsellor helped me massively on how to deal with bullies and I am now managing to survive. I won’t be leaving the team without the severance pay. They can su-k my di-k!
it's called politics and networking
Oh gawd, in ISG, that's all there is. Especially the india teams....they can do no wrong.
