Better to leave than wait for a promotion

If you want a promotion here, it’s not about performance, it’s about who you grab lunch with. It didn't take me long to figure out the game is all politics and timing. Plus, the raise is usually so tiny that in the end, it's better to jump ship than wait for some half-hearted bump.

In my 13 years at BNYM I was never offered a promotion. I was, however, shifted from team to team with the expectation that I would then handle more job responsibilities with each successive transfer. I know that I leapt at least a grade higher (probably more like two) as I moved "up" in my department. I bit the bullet until I had a large enough nest egg saved up, then quit with three days notice the first day back to work in the new year.

@de Interesting… This has been happening in our department too. Since the new manager took over, every single male employee has been promoted—some even multiple times—while none of the female employees have. One by one, the women have been eliminated.

They dont promote women here regardless or having a male or female manager. I'm in technology 12 years and never seen a female promoted in my area but every man here longer than 5 yeara has been promoted at least once. But head of tech is a women so they can't be accused of discrimination.

Meh. My promotion wasn’t worth it. It was a nice confidence boost to manage people and the pay increase wasn’t that bad, but it took over 6 months to see it come through, though extra responsibilities started right away. I was still an individual contributor as there was just too much work to delegate. It was jarring when outside people were getting hired at a higher pay with fewer responsibilities whereas I was always on the front lines. If you make the rank of a director or equivalent, plan on waiting a year for that pay increase. Ugh.

If you’re a woman, and your manager is a woman, chances are you won’t be promoted.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve seen blatant favoritism for years, my biggest regret has been staying here as long as I have.
