Everyone is leaving

There are so many people taking the severance pay or finding other jobs and leaving. We are already stretched thin and losing more people before the layoffs have even started.

@bf Not necessarily true. There are obviously business areas they will prioritize and if they lose too many people there, I think they will need to replace (i.e. Streaming has a huge population of remote workers so if many/most opt out in Phase 2, they will have to backfill a decent number of them. )

@ak Very shortsighted to say that because people worked from offices for over a century, that is the way it should always be done - lol. It is only in the past few years that technology has evolved in a way to allow a global workforce to connect without needing to be in the same location. As another poster pointed out, a very small percentage of people take advantage of WFH (and newsflash, those are the same slackers who will find ways to be lazy IN an office too.) Me being in an office, still spending an inordinate amount of time on Zoom, is simply relocating me from my living room to a different location. It will do nothing to increase my productivity. I will, in fact, work less due to commute times.

@ak you just be unaware that remote work was a thing way before covid. Including at Viacom. There are companies out there who historically hired remote only and had very little physical office space. Ever heard of Hashicorp? If you are unaware of something, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

@a8 Everyone needs to remember that it is only a handful of people who take advantage of the WFH. These are the ones who do the minimal amount of work and tries to get over. They are the ones everyone else has to jump in & help to do their jobs. I know who they are within my department and so does everyone else. There are others who do not want the RTO because of medical needs for their kids, spouse and/or elderly parents. These are the ones who have been with the company for some time. They are juggling work and home life. If they were on prem, they would constantly be leaving early to deal with these issues. Now, because we have the ability to work from home, if they need to take care of their kids, spouse or parents, they will log in after hours and take care of what they couldn't at the time. With a shortened staff, I don't see how this would work out for them with RTO in effect? I see this as one of the benefits of WFH. Also realize that a lot of others are taking the buyout because they do not like where the company is going. It has nothing to do with going back to the office 5 days a week. There are depts that have been so severely cut that they are doing the work of 3 people and working 14+ hour days. Many without any OT. It's challenging and really taking a toll, especially when you have managers in charge who knows there is 1/3 of a team left but they nevertheless keep harassing you with "Why hasn't this been done?" and "This needs to get done today". They preach work-life balance, but apparently, it only applies to them and not their team. And the minute you tell them how hard you're working to get things done, they only go out of their way to make you look bad to the entire team. Who wants to stay in such a toxic work environment? It's just berating and no one needs to be insulted in such a way.

The poster is right. Commercials are out of hand. Everyone I know has cut the cord. Will never be a final MASH or Seinfeld last episode with half the country watching at the same time.

@am that is the d-mbest thing I've heard. NFL football is broadcast TV. Wheel of Fortune, JEOPARDY and Family Feud are broadcast TV. Their nightly numbers crush any streaming number.

Nobody watches broadcast TV. All online streaming. Too many commercials. A one hour show is only 42 minutes long with 18 minutes of commercials. No good content to hold attention

Most roles are set for rehire. I know all 7 of my opt ins I am allowed to rehire the roles in NY or LA.

If DE and crew couldn’t have predicted this would be the inevitable outcome of their strict RTO mandate and $2 billion cost cutting efforts, they are worse leaders than anyone originally thought.
