Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Why Even Post Jobs If They’re Already Filled Internally?

I’ve been working for Nike on and off for about five years now as an ETW. Ironically, with all the recent layoffs, this has actually been the closest thing to career stability I’ve had, especially since the industry I came from is falling apart and jobs are becoming scarcer and more competitive.

Over the years I’ve interviewed for several FTW positions across different departments. Each time I’d make it to the final round, only to see the role go to someone internal, usually another ETW or an FTW already in the department. It’s frustrating because it feels like applying for a job you were never really in the running for.

Lately I’ve noticed a ton of internal promotions popping up, especially in the last couple of weeks, but none of those positions were ever posted publicly. Is it a myth that positions that are essentially promotions have to be open to the public to apply?

@tv

I was mentoring a high performer who was stuck in a bs role. same sh-t happened, the director hired someone with no experience over this dude, the reason? they both were coming from the same country and spoke the same mother tongue.

The dude left in rage and joined a competitor, he was putting out output that was equivilent to 3 average FTEs. Thats what HR did, they brought in 2 ETWs to cover the dude. with triple the cost.

The dude got promoted 2 times at the competitor in 2 years and is happy.

HR is a joke

@zg you sound pretty stupid. There's no entitlement in my tone whatsoever. I'm simply asking this in relation to jobs posted when the intention of internal promotion, but you got you head in your a-s you must be a hiring manager.

@tv honestly if you’re situation is so passive agressive you’re getting filtered without an honest conversation about why I’d say you need to move on, or read the room. It should not be a surprise if you don’t have a great relationship with the hiring manager that you’re not being considered. Your spite and entitlement can be read in your comment and I’m sure it’s louder on the team.

I had the completely opposite experience. I applied for a newly created manager role for my team as the most senior member of the team. My education, skills and prior demonstrated Nike experiences matched perfectly with 11 of the 12 requirements on the posting. The hiring director did not even allow me to interview for the role and used TA to filter me out. The job was given to an ETW, a "former" consultant from the same consulting company the hiring director was hired from. The kicker to all of this is the person that got the job has less experience and lower education in unrelated field.

The hiring process at Nike is highly flawed and constantly gamed. HR/TA have been gutted and completely ineffective at upholding any kind of governance or standards in the hiring process.
I wish you luck.

It has been stressed to recruit and hire more from the outside in order to bring in new talent. Perhaps it is org dependent

@aj The process IS broken but my guess is that you may be the recipient of a “fake” promotion or a job that you wrote the job description for. I’ve been gone from the swoosh for a while but I can guarantee you the shenanigan are corrupt. It’s not a “fair” process and that’s ok because life isn’t fair. You must be an exception with a trophy that you didn’t actually earn.

Hate to say it but it’s the same everywhere and also very much a big part of the job market right now.

As someone else said the recent moves are because of the reorg so no, roles won’t be posted and we see this as a good thing because in the past Nike would just lay a ton of people off and repost roles and this time there was an effort to find people a place when they could.

That said, the market in most industries id very much struggling and when faced with two candidates people tend to go with who they trust and may already know. It’s no myth all business is about relationships so I suggest spending time building more.

If you’re getting to the final rounds it’s not your resume, talent or interview skills. It’s one of two things: either someone isn’t feeling the “magic” when you meet (eg chemistry) or someone is literally a tad more qualified in either experience, relationships / is a known entity, or both.

I beg to differ and feel for you OP. The system is flawed. We have Directors who write their own job description and then apply while other applicants are humiliated through a process that wasn’t anything more than a check the box. It’s starting to stack up and the secrets aren’t so secret anymore. Starfish #2! The so called promotions….not equal opportunity either. A pattern you can see and it’s unfortunately nothing more than favoritism. With your dignity in tact look outside of the swoosh. I believe in you! Also, you can speak up anonymously (NOT) and have someone toss your complaint in the trash with all the others. Good luck my friend.

A lot of the recent promotion or new role announcements were a result of the recent org shifts and not posted as open roles. When roles do get posted, you’re right in observing that often there is an internal candidate who is well-positioned to land the role. That’s why making connections and building relationships in the teams you wish to join is so important, especially at Nike. Hiring teams may be open to an external candidate in theory, so they get posted externally — but it’s tough to beat an internal candidate who has already proven themselves within the team.

@aj you are clearly are on the other side of it. No, there’s no law but most big corporations open positions to public even if the plan to promote from within. It’s been a common practice for years. It is a flawed system if the intention was always to hire the candidate they open the position for. Why just promote them with making people think they have a chance.

  1. If you interviewed and went against other ETW and external candidates have you thought maybe you just were not the best?

  2. There is no law they have to post internal positions and it’s good they can actually promote without making everyone compete for the next role. It su-ks to have someone crush it and not elevate them. They should not have to compete for the next level they earned 100% of the time.

This post sounds like the process is broken because it hasn’t worked for you personally not that anything is really wrong.
