Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Severance

Do employees in the U.S. typically receive severance packages when they are laid off, such as X weeks of pay per year of service?

With how much money lust and overall monetary greed there is at this company I’m surprised they even do severance packages

They don’t need to do these do they? They can just kick you to the curb with nothing if they wanted to.

Blessed are the job creators I guess, thank our capitalist overlords for sparing some crumbs and letting a few crumbs “trickle down” and hit the floor.

In the US there are no Federal labor laws that mandate severance payments when laid off. Which means that it is completely up to your employer how much, if anything, they will pay you.

Big employers like O do provide severance, which is typically X weeks of pay based on years of service (often with a cap), and most require you to sign a form giving up your rights to sue your employer for just about anything: any type of discrimination, harassment or any other illegal activity that the employer might have committed against you.

Some employers offer "voluntary severance" packages, which are sometimes called "early retirement" packages (O does not offer this). Typically older employees are offered these packages, which are usually more generous than layoff packages and often provide paid for health insurance benefits for a period of time. Employees who accept these packages may continue working until their separation date, which could be weeks or months away. These are used to get rid of older employees without risking age discrimination lawsuits.

Smaller employers sometimes give you 2-3 weeks of severance. And many give none at all.

The standard package Oracle gives is 4 weeks for the 1st year of service + 1 week for every year after that, capped at 26 weeks.

Got laid off Wednesday (10/1) very abruptly. Was told I’d get 14 weeks. Severance. I’d been there 11.5 years

26 weeks just hit my bank. One day after return laptop was received in RWS.

Can't speak for all places but Oracle gives severance to employees they RIF. One week's pay for every year they've worked there, capped at 26 weeks.

I'm hearing different numbers for folks who've been there only a year (or less?), either 2 weeks or, more recently, 4 weeks.

I personally was there long enough to get the max.
