The best way for someone to prepare for a possible layoff is to make sure that their skills are still sharp and professional connections are up to date. That can't hurt even if the rumors about cuts turn out to be false.
I will never understand why some allow themselves to be lulled into a false sense of job security and stop looking completely!?

I know why people get left behind. I’m living it at my otherwise excellent company now. Lots of entrenched people, managers and ideas. Basically it takes so long to get up to speed and stay there with complex tech, the years and decades can pass by with little notice.
Companies like to keep people trained enough to do a very narrow skill. But not enough to be attractive to other employers.
Call it career arthritis. You must do what you would do for medical arthritis.
Move a lot. Even if it hurts. Especially when it hurts.

Ok Mr roboto, this is why I'll be moving to a construction real man's job. Have fun wasting time getting useless certs that expire every 18 months.
