What the he-l are we doing on Fridays?

Why in the world are we going to the office on Fridays? Bartlesville is a ghost town and it borders on mental torture sitting in the office all day by yourself.

@sn I think what “ki-led The ‘Ville” was the passage of Oklahoma’s incredibly lax Medical Mari--ana law. Once that passed, I noticed that open Bartlesville positions became Houston positions. Any time someone leaves Bvl, their job posting goes to Houston.

Also there was an increase in Bvl-to-Houston relocations, particularly with senior management, hence the reason there are no managers there anymore.

@OP I hope you don’t have a long commute. I know one person who relocated to OKC during COVID because they believed WFH was the new norm.

I can understand the frustration of a long commute just to sit in an empty office but you gotta admit: It’s good to have a job.

This whole 9-5 workday is a remnant relic of the Henry Ford industrial age of assembly lines where output was a linear function of man-hours applied. In todays Information era everybody knows that productivity happens in spurts and max 3-4 hours peak everyday so we should not be held to those benchmarks, but simply by what value we bring to bottomline.

@ed FYI 30 minutes is the lunch requirement. Up to you if you want to make it an hour each day. My group usually works through it and calls it 30 minutes, and we don't feel guilty on the rare occasion we have a 2 hour group lunch.

@eg. Yep. If they wanted to get rid of the 9/80 I think they would have already. People haven't been working the "full" days for as long as I have been here which is over a decade. Some days yes, some days no. And some days I personally don't take lunch. Somedays I may take 75 min and run some errands.

@ed you've done a lot of hypothesized on your own. Unfortunately it's not all based on fact and is certainly lacking evidence. I can't speak to the PTO issue, but HR was NOT part of the RTO decision, that was purely an ELT decision. Regarding 9/80's going away, this seams to be your opinion, mighty time watcher that you are.

Don’t worry. If you survive the 25% global staff reductions, you won’t be alone in the office on Fridays for long. Plans are being considered to eliminate the 9/80 flex schedule later in 2026. The reason is the same one that led to the elimination of working from home and moving from “vacation” to “PTO” (which effectively made employees use vacation leave for sick leave). That reason is “too many employees abuse it”. Most employees do not work 9 hours per day Monday through Thursday. Remember that your lunch hour does not count towards your nine hours worked. To be compliant with the company’s policy, you should be in the office 10 hours per day Monday through Thursday. That’s 8:00am to 6:00pm (includes lunch). You could also do 7:00am to 5:00pm. Ask your HRBP. They’ll confirm that your nine hour work day should not include lunch. Very few employees follow that procedure, and that’s why the 9/80 schedule will come to an end. Like so many other great things, the 9/80 schedule will fade away because too many people abuse it. Layoffs will be hard on those that lose their jobs, but it won’t be a picnic for those that remain either.
