Direct reports for directors was 20, does this apply to senior directors as well as many of them have less than this? Or have the goalposts changed again?

IMPO, there were FAR too many SR. Managers to begin with but most SM had teams of under 13ish. Which was great because the SM got to ACTUALLY know each person on a more personal level which, helped with promotions and/or better raises.
My team is 13 people. My manager was demoted to an "IC" which basically means they are the "PM" now. But other than that, nothing has changed for us. We still have 1x1's with him, we still report basically everything to him and ultimately he still acts as our manager. The only things he can't do now is what we all care about! - promotions, raises, PTO.
My director is pretty cool and laid back but, he has 20 reports and our 1x1's are literally like 5-7 minutes lol. I asked my manager about this and he laughed and said "sounds about right." He's not a talker and it's very cut and dry. "I have nothin for ya today. Whats goin on? What can i do for ya?" And that's about it. Which IMPO su-ks.
With my manager (whom I still consider my manager even though he's technically not) our 1x1s are always a solid 30-40 mins long. Most is work related but much is also just personal stuff and basic chit chat.
I - like a LOT of people - am far overdue for a promotion and am now a bit depressed that it isn't gonna happen soon because, my director knows NOTHING about me. He isn't involved in our weekly team meetings, he's MIA 100% up until our 5 minute 1x1's every month. It's a running joke that his 1x1's are so short lol. And I don't blame him because, 20 1x1's is a LOT to do. Especially when I'm sure he has his own work to do...
I mean, the only saving grace is that the director talks with my "manager" weekly and gets reports of what we are all doing but, I feel like a personal relationship is vital with your reports, as well.
@nb No, the required ratios are a minimum not an absolute target. If there are 30 on a team, no need for layoffs just because of manager-employee ratio. Plenty of other reasons management can come up for layoffs though
So if my group is now 30 to 1 does that mean 10 more folks are going to get cut?
But what difference does it make anyways? My manager has stopped having 1-2-1 long time ago and the only time we get to talk to him is for 15 minutes on our morning calls.
That’s it!
Also, I see dellTeam direct reports under some managers and directors. They will not run out of DRs if they are meant to stay.
@d9 the 20-1 ratio just creates a bottleneck. I have a great director and I feel for him. I onetime wanted to move up however not any longer.
@cd insane numbers of direct reports. Left Dell and am now a senior manager at a healthy company, currently hiring and am now having 10 direct reports and we are planning to have another manager hired to offload.
What a difference, lol.
@cd no problem they put as many project managers as the number match and problem resolved.
Sr. Dir and below have 20:1 ratio, while VP and above have 15:1. There are some exceptions in the system though - on extended timeline.
@b0Was informed it is now 30 to 1
Goalpost highly depends on nepotism and a-s kissing.
I was cut from a team that had 38 people, was told the Director had to get to 30 direct reports. Manager got demoted to IC role.
Target is for this to be done by end of year. It’s average across L4 levels. people most impacted by this are the leaders losing their title or having to run a team of 20+.
They want to increase it as high as they can.
Guidance is VP and up is 15. Sr Director and below is 20. Some groups made the changes quickly and some didn't. Not sure what the consequences will be if you don't comply.
It's average across the org
@b0 I heard this was coming and couple.months ago, no idea if it has been implemented yet.
Did they not increase the required number of reports? First it was 20, then moved up again to 22 or 24? Something like that
