Looks like HSE and ETC May Fold Into Operations

I just had a conversation with my new boss after getting the new role, and I’m really enjoying it here at Chevron. I recently got promoted, which has been a huge relief, especially since I’m a new dad, definitely makes life a bit easier. However, my boss did mention that I shouldn’t get too comfortable, as the future of HSE and ETC is uncertain. The organization still seems a bit bloated compared to other companies, and there’s talk that HSE and ETC might eventually be absorbed into Ops or FE, or restructured in some way.

I have my MS, and many of my mentors at Chevron, who have all recently retired, have been advising me to start looking at other opportunities. They’re saying that the HSE and ETC leadership roles, like VP, may disappear. While I’m excited about this new position, I can’t help but wonder whether I should start updating my resume now or wait to see how things play out. I’ve also heard that both of the VPs in these areas don’t have the best reputation internally or externally, so I’ve been cautioned to be careful when I start exploring other options.

Would love to hear thoughts from anyone who’s been in a similar situation or has any advice on how to approach this.

Did they tell you about the constant reorgs? HSE was announced to be good candidates for ENGINE. Not likely HSE will survive the next few years.

Centralize, decentralize. Rinse and repeat. Been going on since at least the 50’s. Executives think they have to change something to look relevant.

No pot stirring here as I am not the OP. I am in FE and I still call that group ETC for some reason. I think it is just habit. It took me forever to start saying wells instead of drilling. I do know that we looked at having fragmented (if that is the correct word) HSE groups in FE, Downstream, Ops, etc. reporting into our VPs. The centralized model of the center would just fade away. I do think that is the best model as we all have unique risk etc. All I know is that it has been on the table many time and it is an agenda item at our October meeting just to talk about it at a high level. I don't think our HSE group is terrible but they are definitely not world class or on par with Exxon.

Is this the same person that constantly posts about HSE and ETC? Now the ETC that I keep thinking about has been gone since 2015. Are you just stirring the pot or do you have actual information? Any post that references “HSE and ETC” hasn’t been accurate including this one.

I’m a recently retired (let’s be honest, pushed out) FE with 30 years at CVX. Let me be blunt: the pay here is unbeatable, but that's where the positives end, especially in your group. Outside of HR, you’re in the worst organization in the entire company. If you care about your career, get out now.

Your group has a reputation, for good reason, for being filled with the most incompetent employees and leaders CVX has to offer. If you leave, expect lower pay but a better quality of life: a longer, more fulfilling career surrounded by capable professionals. If you stay, you’ll be well-compensated to be miserable, constantly on edge about your future, and surrounded by imposters who are insecure, petty, and quick to stab you in the back if they think you’re a threat to their fragile status.

The decision is yours, just don’t say no one warned you.
