The office has become a shell. For those who have returned, it feels like working in a morgue — silence, no collaboration, no energy. At least at home people could put the radio on and feel some life around them. We tried free coffee for a week, but once that was gone, so were the people. Now we have staff commuting in only to sit in isolation on video calls. It is soul-destroying, and I worry about the mental impact on those who are complying. If management isn’t prepared to properly enforce office attendance, then this halfway approach is pointless and damaging.

That sounds like a demoralizing environment. However, my experience has been the opposite. There is constant interaction here, and several people I know who were resistant to coming back to the office have admitted there are benefits. I'm sure it's 100% dependent on the specific group, but some are energized by the return to office.
Bootlicking baby boomers person nailed it. Get rid of the boomer so we can work remote and get together once a month/quarter. On ur way boomer!
All these bootlicking babies boomers my mind.
"I work at the plant and don't get to work from home, so stop crying!"
Cool dude, life isn't fair. Get a different job that allows you to WFH.
"3M is doing what every other large company is doing... you are replaceable."
No sh-t, and so are you. You're a number on a spreadsheet. Cool, nothing sets you apart like blindly following everyone else. Instead of being able to hire some of the best minds across the country we get to stick to a 50sq mile radius. Brilliant!
Do the bare minimum, get paid, and go enjoy your life. Don't let the ba----d grind you down.
Anyone complaining is probably still employed with 3M. Maybe stop complaining that 3M is doing what every large company is doing. It is the times, not the companies and you are replaceable
@dv
Thanks for supporting BB, thanks for helping plant positions pay on par with gas stations (lots of examples), and thanks for supporting downsizing through coercion at HQ. I am sure it won’t hurt any workers.
@dr Oh absolutely, I’ve devoted hours this week to the vital business of tracking holidays and house moves. Truly groundbreaking stuff. On the plus side, at least I’ve now got my next holiday destination sorted. Nothing says productivity like turning work into a travel agency and social club. #love3M
Use RTO to collaborate. Is your neighbor that day reporting to someone in the same state or country? Do they report to management in another country that causes them to make more than their manager? Are they working on projects to review plants and potential closures? Of course collaborate to get things done, but if the people you work with are in other locations, you could always use your on site opportunities to ‘collaborate’ in other types of ways.
@dc whether BB is truly that intelligent to use Psyops to divide people and drive them out without a severance, it remains to be seen.
What is clear is that the 3M many people joined and loved is dying, if not dead. BB is going to break up the pieces, collect some kind of "reward" from the Board for each break-up, and then retire to his Florida yacht.
The two reasons for the stock bump since The Roman Empire collapsed are: (1) WS knows BB can't be worse than Mikey and (2) WS think BB can somehow get more for the sum of the parts than the whole. WS is right about 1 but I'm not sure about 2. Tireman so damaged the supply chain and MTE roles that the business "patients" are brain dead and on life support. What is the NEXT BIG THING coming out of the pipeline to save this company?
Everyone is in it together. The point of RTO is to get people to quit, get more of those that don’t and establish control (no more pensions, no WYW, less benefits, outsourcing, global roles, and executive control). If you complain, it is worker against worker saying at least you got to work from home or you don’t have odd hour calls because of outsourcing and global roles. This is exactly what they want to drive people out, outsource roles, relocate plants and consolidate operations. It all equals a lesser 3M and worse options for all workers while they sell into high end markets. Stand together or fall together - this is 3M dying unless enough decide it is still special.
I’m so sorry this is happening to you.
Signed,
70% of 3M Employees that never got the option to work from home.
We are now three weeks into RTO and the reality is stark: not a single face-to-face meeting has taken place — everything is still happening on Teams. Around 90% of desks remain empty on any given day. Staff are demoralised, productivity is falling, and this trajectory points to a very poor Q4 if nothing changes.
The current approach is not working. Without critical mass or a clear purpose for being in the office, those who comply feel punished rather than supported. This is having a detrimental impact on wellbeing while delivering no business benefit.
If RTO is to succeed, it needs to be structured and enforced consistently. Otherwise, we risk both disengagement and underperformance at a critical point in the year. Is this really what BB wanted?
Welcome to 3M SEVERENCE. We now work in a subsidiary called Lumon Industries that is housed in the 3M campus center. If you are unfamiliar with the Apple TV+ series read on.
Severance is an Apple TV+ show about a procedure that medically splits an employee's consciousness, creating an "innie" (work self) with no memory of their outside life and an "outie" (personal self) with no knowledge of their work. The sci-fi psychological thriller, directed by Ben Stiller, uses this premise to explore themes of identity, corporate control, work-life balance, and the ethics of compartmentalizing one's life, set against a dystopian backdrop at the enigmatic Lumon Industries.

Yes, job eliminations are real at Lumon Industries and 3M.
It’s pointless and damaging even with enforcement.
