Pentagon awards Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Oracle $9B cloud contract

The U.S. Defense Department has awarded lucrative cloud-computing contracts to four companies: Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Oracle. The contracts run through 2028 and could be valued as high as $9 billion.

For those who remember, IBM had protested the JEDI contract award to Amazon in 2018. IBM’s GM for US Federal market, Sam Gordy, had said at the time "A single-cloud approach is the wrong approach”. Well, the Pentagon apparently listened and went with multiple cloud vendors this time and IBM still didn't make the cut! Too bad. Could've staved off the firings in some areas.

Oracle is actually a top hyper-scaler, pulling ahead of GCP already. Read the Oracle 10Q from yesterday, growing 50% with ~$4B cloud rev. in the last quarter. The compliance bar is very very high here, no vendor got anything resembling a token contract. The opposite.

When I read this I almost sp-t the coffee out of my mouth laughing hysterically. Oh yes we're all in on cloud, lol IBM is a pathetic cesspool of a company. Finally getting what they deserve after years of discrimination executive bloat and horrific HR practices. Go Amazon Google Oracle and Microsoft! Best day of my life was walking out the door of IBM with no notice.

IBM has moved their focus to very very large machines (mostly mainframe) As such there was no way they could win the dept of defense contract which is centered almost exclusively around Intel. Could Amazon subcontract IBM if mainframe/hybrid skills were needed You betcha

Why would any sane person trust their defense to an IBM product?

But Tom Rosamilla sent me an email saying we were all-in on cloud. He even included his picture where he was wearing a suit and smiling so I believed him!

Oracle is only there as a token non-hyperscaler because they sued. As the article says, Oracle's total cloud revenues are only 4% of Amazons. Their portion of the $9B contract is likely a similar share of it. There are only 3 players in Cloud, the real question is whether Google can hang on or will there eventually only be 2. IBM is not a player here, expect IBM Cloud to be wound down soon.

US government is aware that IBM discriminates and fire older employees for the only reason that they are over 45.

IBM is no longer a player in the Cloud business unless an IBM solution is used on any of the Big Cloud providers. There is no surprise there, IBM is a Tech laggard.
