Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Whats going on ?

The company's completely silent. Management was told to just hold the status quo, no new plans. Honestly, I'm just going through the motions now that my VP is gone. We talked about all my career goals, and now he's not around. I'm really not sure what's next with the new leadership; it feels like I'm back at square one.

On top of that, Oracle is tagging everything with "cloud" and "AI." I'm not sure what that means for raises or promotions for us in middleware and other fusion roles. I'm in a tough spot and can't really look for another job. Even if I did, recruiters would probably just see me as one of the recent layoff victims. They barely reach out to Oracle employees as it is, and with these latest layoffs, I doubt they'd even look at my resume.

Should I take off for a week or ten days ?

@em I think offshoring is a bigger threat. Just look at how much O's head count grew over the last ten tears. I'll bet the lions share of those new hires were offshore. During our quarterly all hands meetings there would be a page on the power point welcoming new hires by name and location. 90%+ were offshore.

@a4 in many departments this has been planned for. What the VP or Managers did not know was the timing.

@a6 the fact that you are blaming others for your lack of intelligence is telling…

The message from the top is clear. Oracle's direction is AI and Cloud Infrastructure. Whether the gamble will pay off is a different matter altogether. Funding the AI DCs needs money and layoffs is one of the measures of mobilising funds internally. It is my educated guess that employees laid off from OCI teams were largely due to performance and from other teams based on the respective product's revenue generating ability. In the case of the latter, it appears that many skilled, hard working employees drew the short stick unfortunately.

I advice you to take a few days of a sick leave just to recover your strenght and clear mind - working there seeing suddenly disappearing employees must be very exhausting and drilling - mental health condition is very important, just don’t ignore it and take care of yourself.

One thing, enjoy the slow times.
Two, Cloud and AI are going to change the IT landscape.
I'm thinking companies will have less middle to low engineers but they will always need hi level engineers.

No need to deport h1bs. We just need to send all AI Back to Beta Testing forever! LOL LOL LOL LOL

When do we get to hit the pause button on property tax and capital gains tax? Right now, I feel like I’m paying luxury prices for law enforcement–level service, which basically means no service at all LOL LOL LOL

This is just normal.

It seems that nobody in HR does anything except layoffs, and nobody knows that you getting laid off until the day your boss gets the message and you are kicked out. I saw multiple managers go before me and the bosses yell at each other in the meetings while on the huge Zoom meetings they talk as if everything is perfect and how great everything is.

In my department we started branding our on-premises product as a fancy cloud AI solution, which to be honest it is just sugar coating everything. But in the end all these cloud solution is just another on-premises product running on some server, right? Oh, and that does not give you any raises. At least before you got job security in exchange, but now you got NOTHING.

I have to tell you this house of cards has to fail at some point because the only thing Oracle is making money from is OCI and the margins on the basic compute stuff is not really that high since we are not squeezing those bandwidth fees like AWS/Azure.
