Thread regarding Phillips 66 layoffs

Why am I suddenly hearing rumors about layoffs in October?

Did I miss something?

@3a7 I disagree that jobs are out there for the taking. I agree that refining has transferrable skills that can be valuable in other industries, but you really need to upskill and sell it hard. All industries are cost cutting and the norm now is people job hopping because there is no stability literally anywhere. The boomers got the great bo-m times, but hard to be optimistic. LNG is an option, but with the instability of prices that doesn't seem all that immune to frequent headcount reduction cycles either. The main culprit is really private equity putting immense pressure on increasing short term shareholder value to the behest of long term stability and that is everywhere. This is the natural end game for capitalism and we are in it. Squeeze every cent to the detriment of everything else

@36x there’s jobs, may not be the same industry and it’s going to take a longer time to search, interview, etc.. but refining experience has given us all skills that can be carried elsewhere in technology sectors. Phillips 66 is trying to squeeze the life out of every employee to get their monies worth, without giving us a path for growth or long term loyalty to its employees. Time to move on, the place will become irrelevant in the energy sector since it won’t be able to retain or attract talent.

Well, at least they're making it a LOT harder to get an SGL bump.

@2wg is the money really worth putting up with that? Maybe it’s time to pick a pill and get yourself out of the matrix. Look around. Open your eyes 👀.

@2tr If things are really that bad why are people still working there? Money is the main reason why people.

The Borger Refinery is really a good place to work, just because it has its ups/downs doesn’t mean it’s a bad place to work. I would recommend anyone to work there. Some time work isn’t easy, that’s the reason they call it work.

I really like it when high performers leave the Borger Refinery for greener pastures!

Seeing posts on LinkedIn from folks announcing they are leaving Phillips 66 really warms my heart! You do you! Know your worth!

Get out before you get outsourced.

They want to follow in the footsteps and mistakes of Chevron Engine - outsource everything!! Time to get out of this place, it’s crumbling with no talent crony management who no longer invest in the very people that have kept refineries running.

@ee heh- I’ll one up you. In the ‘22 EOY layoffs I know a senior person who was laid off while on the road representing the company at an Industry Event! Their Leaders Group level boss got let go the day before and begged them not to call the person while on the road on business laying them off, since they could no longer do so in a proper way themselves. Those in charge in that market - facing part of the company didn’t care. One bit.

Trust no one. Watch your a$$. This company is absolute garbage. Elliott will be back to take out the trash again soon hopefully.

@138, some folks got fired from BRT because of this.

That’s been happening at wrr for years.

HR is comparing time off logged to badge building access to verify folks are logging time off correctly. Facilities has already been targeted and had and will have some shown the door.

The company has long been known for its reluctance to transition contract employees into full-time roles, particularly within the IT organization. There is little justification for withholding full-time employment from individuals who have served two or more years while performing the exact same responsibilities as their full-time colleagues.

It is a widely shared view that Phillips 66 has been guilty of maintaining this practice for far too long.

Everyone knows P66 is not serious about retaining top talent anymore. They are all in on the low cost new engineer and outsourcing model. Experienced talent is too expensive for their model. Only looking to retain people for 3 to 5 years then rotate them out and replace with new hires.

They’ve been protected by the jv. Now it’s all on the table.

Outside of the limited on-site finance resources, i wouldn't expect a lot of work impacted for support roles because of the wrb change. Those sites are also pretty bare in resources already.

@h4 yep that makes sense. Supporting functions will be reduced by at least half without need of all the extra reporting they had to do within the JV. If you are anything other than operations find some boxes. Not just at the refinery though Bartlesville and Houston as well. Welcome to Phillips 66's Business Transformation Borger and Wood River.

On the HR floor, I heard them mentioning borger and WR are the next targets. Makes sense.

Picture being on vacation in another state and receiving a call that your position has been eliminated. Of course I’d treat this company as a stepping stone. At its core, Phillips 66 is an unstable employer.

You should expect layoffs everywhere. P66 used to be a better place. Nowadays, it's just a paycheck to collect along to way to somewhere better. Get some experience and move on.

That sounds early. Don't think org design is supposed to wrap up until some time next year.
