I’m not even talking about offshoring. There are plenty of openings right here in the US. Why is the company hiring people if we’re supposedly in such a terrible position that we need to lay off a large chunk of the workforce worldwide?

@cw on the damned cobra thing, i have gotten different answers, like oh you have cobra automatically, no. One said just use the united health card ..no. My pharmacist said
cobra is a ROUGH transition.
At least the PC box came today, that baby is going out tomorrow.
I wish good luck to all of you.
They have done enough of these layoffs, they could do alot better if the emails sent from oracle explained a bit about how to get that free Cobra for the first month, and do we get our regular pay until sept 22 where we get vacation ect pay? I was told after you sign the termination agreement, lets say you need a medication a few days later, you pay, and Cobra is "retroactive" to sep 22 or so. i am still amazed by the scope of these cuts, but
as said before here, its about the $$$$$. Ct support, eh who cares. :)
Over 20 years ago I was laid off, and my former employer provided "outplacement" assistance (I think the outplacement firm was Lee Hecht Harrison). They mostly helped us to update our resumes, how to interview and how to find job listings.
One of the things they told us was to not be put off if a firm was having a layoff. They said it was very normal for companies to hire and layoff at the same time. Another thing they told us was to respond when asked why we were unemployed: "My position was eliminate in a mass layoff." and say nothing else.
Granted, this advice is ancient and is probably not valid anymore.
we should all apply for jobs. :) The glorious HR dept would probably not know. :)
I don't understand why they don't give opportunities for long time employees to grow internally and change areas.
To claw back RSUs.
I don't understand why they don't give opportunities for long time employees to grow internally and change areas. This company HR is despicable.

Some jobs would be just going away, not needed any more because of AI like mine and the folks in my group doing the same job - and we were BUSY. Some were let go because they don't need as many people to do the work because of AI being faster.
The first story I heard was that they are cutting expenses to offset the cost of building a new AI data center. This is in addition to the jobs going away. NO idea if they've implemented AI yet or just that "it's coming".
Maybe just hiring people more fit for the future needs?
