Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

It's crazy how quickly someone can fall out of favor

I’ve watched good people suddenly get nitpicked to death, with every small mistake magnified and every project second guessed until they finally give up and leave. It always feels personal, not professional. Nobody turns from an exemplary employee into a bad one overnight, even though management sometimes tries to make it seem that way. I’ll be honest, I’ve been walking on eggshells to avoid the same thing happening to me.

It happened to me at another company. A side effect is that you need references. Hard to get them if they all think you are not as worthy as you once would have been had you left earlier on your own. This still assumes you were always good at your job regardless of the unnecessary and purposeful (and wrong) nitpicking to get you to quit.

Its sad but somewhat validating to read all these comments. I was layed off in Nov 2023. I went from ‘simply amazing and loved’ then reorged into that hideous cdep group to ‘Doesnt add any value’ It was 2 years of awful abuse. It totally affected my health and well being. I really thought I was losing my mind, the put downs were so severe. I fought it tho even when I knew I was losing. I just dont know how some of those people can live with themselves. All I can say is let karma get them.

Yeah, the basic approach if you want to survive this part of the great cull is to simply go along with whatever you manager wants to do, no matter how stupid it is. Otherwise, being managed out is in your future. Horrible strategy that will blow up in their faces, but that's their problem.

This happened to me despite great metrics and repeated "meets" performance reviews. They target people who don't "fit the mold" regardless of their work quality. They nitpicked the fnock out of me and when I fought back, they fired me for "unprofessionalism." One of my "teammates" was fired for the same thing before me; now they are working on another former "teammate." I don't know what it's like in other departments, but in my department, every TL and manager had photos of their families as their wallpaper. How does that happen? Do they get an email saying, "now that you're a manager...", or do the "management material" types know this already? Such cult-like behavior. Glad I'm not there anymore.

Not in AA, but it sure feels like I am. Grateful for the support and honesty here—it helps to know we’re all taking it one day at a time.

I was a top performer and sent to SanAntonio for recognition just a few short years ago. My senior manager was displaced due to some petty rivalries with her boss and my manager's organization was splintered and spread among multiple teams. Since then, I've had 4 managers in 3 years and treated like an outcast. The organization I managed was told to stand down and stop doing our production activities in early 2025. My team literally had nothing to do. As a result I was told word for word what to say in their mid-year reviews and to give them all inconsistently meets ratings. In addition, I myself was given an inconsistently meets for "failing to keep them busy" even though we were told to stop what we were doing with no other direction. They have all been scattered across my parent organization since mid-years were released and were all placed in corrective action plans at the direction of our management multiple levels up. Ive been turned into my manager's personal errand boy. I have 25 years in so I'm just waiting this out for RTO to kick in for me in Oct otherwise I would have walked away a long time ago. After that I'll never let the name wells Fargo cross my field of vision again

I see this happen constantly with my teammates when dealing with th members of CIB Markets COO. That org is toxic and has some of the d-mbest people I’ve ever worked with in my 20+ career and somehow they always seem to stay in place while the good people who get tired of dealing with them leave. Would be nice if leaders actually did something about this group, which drops the ball constantly and acts like pit bulls when it comes to actually doing work for the business. Heard they’re on the block next year and can’t be too soo

This also happened to me and despite having an exceeds rating was displaced and replaced with 2 external hires. Reason for displacement 'job criticality' and yet replaced with people with same experience - the difference they were compensated less and the one had a working history with the worthless manager who's days are numbered

I have learned that the moment this starts, start looking for a new job. It doesn’t end well, and if you stay too long, you will need therapy for the psychological abuse and lose your sense of competence when you do find another job.
And F the managers for implementing this, regardless as to whether the company supports it! You su-k at YOUR job!

This happened to me. I got a good mid year review. No complaints. Even my direct manager said she didn't hear any complaints and I was doing well. She told me my mid year review shouldn't surprise me because I was a solid performer.
When end of year review came, I was labeled meets with one inconsistent. I was surprised reading the snarky comments that my work now had errors, I wasn't helpful enough. I couldn't believe it. No one had said anything to me about this. I didn't know where it was coming from.
By March, I was laid off. Corporate America is backstabbing. I agree with OP 💯.

@a7 This is becoming MO in technology companies. Good people are being pushed out based on manufactured lies.

Yep. It's called "managing them out", which is code for 'treat people like total garbage so they'll quit'. All part of Sharts domestic employee extermination campaign. It's one method for getting rid of people that haven't violated any policy.

Exact situation is happening to me BIG TIME. I can't believe it. Boss makes me feel like the worst person in the world nearly everyday and does formal check-in's so he can document and hopefully get me to quit. This is after many years of Exceeds now down to almost Needs Improvement. These people are disgusting and once I get a good enough position to replace I will leave the toxic cesspool that my company has become from this weak insecure JPM morning C-team leadership on down.
