We literally can't function with what we have left. I guess they'll now overload us with work until we quit. Save them money on severance. I can't think of another reason why they'd do something like this.

@b6 what do you mean by this? It may be the multiple sleepless nights this week but I'm not catching your drift.
A common strategy is to make working conditions difficult so that people quit on their own. If that doesn't work, they evaluate your work and find it "lacking" which may be due to lack of people to do the work, then PIP, then you're out.
Remember…there are supposed to be roles.
@OP or your workload will be so high you can’t get everything done and they’ll put you on a PIP and then eventually fire you.
@OP That's their plan...........so they don't have to pay severance the next round(s).
