Thread regarding T-Mobile layoffs

Field Operations

Plans to move Field Operations to a contracted work force by the end of 3rd quarter is in the works. Will be hard to accomplish by then so it may delayed by a few months. This may be partially the reason we seen the shift in senior leadership and no hiring of personnel in needed areas. NTW is the flavor they have been using to help. If this happens severance packages for people refusing to contract will not be on the table. RF will be downsized also.

This is all speculation but we see the moves being made and lack of communication addressing operation concerns.

Ulf was axed, no doubt. I believe that field techs will be cut to a few per state and they will manage contractors who will be parts swappers. If you have a site go down a field tech will dispatch the closest contractor who will go there and replace whatever is needed and the field Technician will verify its up.

The us cellular peeps are awful. I didn’t think so many people could fit in the short bus.

Didn't all the us cellular people on boarded get year contracts?

@qv Agreed. They are going to get rid of all the new merged techs from the buyouts first since they make double the existing techs.

lol field isn’t going anywhere. It probably will
Be downsized but I guarantee you they’re gonna keep a handful of techs. There’s no way they’re going to get rid of all the technicians in the field and contract them out. T-Mobile is a big player now. It would be hilarious to see AT&T and Verizon with real employees while T-Mobile outsource is everything that would make us the national laughing stock. There’s no way they’re gonna trust contractors to do the job 100%.

@k7 Ulf was onboard with that model... it was his model

@gh unman switches totally? def not. Downsize? Absolutely. The days of needing a lot of switch techs are sadly over as regional and national support teams along with automation can take care of the operations. Keep a handful of onsite techs for hardware related issues. Ulf likely wasn't on board with this model and was shown the door. We'll likely see a shift within the markets coming soon, I hope I'm wrong.

@f2 I've not seen any job posting for a switch tech in the last 3 years

@f2 glad to see that the ridiculously stupid idea J.U. had to unman switches is being corrected. Maybe they should unman ops directors? At least in the Central, they could get rid of a sociopathic fricken id--t that thinks he knows all.

@c5 😂 round 2? E// did that once and it failed miserably, so much so they had to have switch techs go back to their roles and man the switches again. Also the central region, with their empty switches, are in the process of getting techs back on site as well.

@c6 I'm waiting till the day their corporate ChatGPT gets hacked. It's scary, tons of internal process getting leaked is worse then some customer info getting breached imo.

Just wait for TMobile gets their first major network hack and lose remote connectivity. Enjoy those workers on the other side of the planet.

I viewed a PowerPoint a year or so ago that shows SWOPS outsourced to E///. It a card needed to be replaced, FOPS did it. In other words, FOPS would be remote hands and switch techs would be outsourced to India. The time zones also made it cheaper because night work in the USA is morning for India (normal biz hours)

@bx I was a senior switch technician for 15 years. You could honestly phase most of them out for remote contractors. The last few I was there I seem to be a babysitter for contractors and just dealing with routine maintenance on HVAC and etc. The biggest share of actual switch work I did was migrating sites to new 100gig circuits. Seems some regions are contracting that work now. The main reason I left working the switch was the lack of work

I'd like to see them layoff the Switch and do unmanned Switches and then watch the network burn to the ground. Vendors already rely on us hard enough.

Where does this stuff even come from? Yes, other areas will be adopting a workforce management model similar to the one already rolled out in the Central Region. And yes, this could mean a reduction in workforce in those areas, since the model significantly reduces the scope of work for FOPs technicians.

Was Ulf asked to Leave or did he retire?
Network is definitely next. Was any field techs or field techs let go last week? No, because they will be pushed to a contract work force. No severance if you don't take the contract position. The central region has been collecting data via work force management tools to gather repair times and price points for 2 years. All at the time working the current work force with no additions. Some markets only have 2 company field techs for 800 plus sites. Several Critical switch locations have 0 T-Mobile employees. The central area lost multiple people because of the working conditions and the leadership failed to backfill. Who's driving this mess? Maybe this why Ulf Left, it's our understanding this all was his directive. He pushed uneducated lower level management to make bad decisions regardless of the implications it caused the current workforce.
