Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Dell underpays so severely, it's actually comical that anyvbody would want to work here.

At one point in time, Dell actually WAS a good place to work. They offered hybrid work, had amazing benefits and PTO, flexibility, and paid competitively. THey also offered RSU's to most people (IC's) and not just those who were already making 200-1m/year (Directors and above...)

Now? RSU's aren't offered to anybody below I believe a SR. Director. Dells benefits and PTO, and flexibility is offered at literally any half decent company these days. So the benefits and 5 weeks PTO is not anything special anymore. Most companies caught up to Dell's benefits or far surpassed it.

As for pay... I make 110k/year with a 5k bonus so chalk it up to 115k/year. Not horrible but not great. I found a job over at AMD that is quite literally my EXACT job right now - same knowledge/skill requirements, same duties, etc... It is MY job right now - but, the starting pay is 120k and goes to 170k. It's hybrid, offers the SAME benefits Dell offeres me now, and the office is 10 mins from my house (instead of 55 minutes.)

Yes, I applied and yes I do have an interview setup. As much as I love my job, team, cowworkers, manager/management of my org, along with everyone I work with; I'd very easily start at AMD with a 140k salary.

And it's not just AMD but, in my field of work MOST companies are paying at minimum 10-20k MORE than what I'm at right now after 6 years at Dell.

Oh, and lets not forget about the lack of promotions for the last 5 years. It's the same story year after year... - I didn't get any REQ's - as my manager (and I think most dell managers) don't promote via merit increases as it's unfair to the rest of the team. I've been on the edge of promotion for 3 years now and,

this January I was asked to fill out an application for a 30k promotion. Filled it out and everything. A week later, I was told the REQ was pulled and it isn't happening. WTF??!!!! My manager is super super cool and has tried to get myself and another person promoted year after year and it's always something.

I would have left already if it weren't for my solid raises tbh. First year I got a 9%, second year, a 5%, 3rd year it was 3.5 I think, 4th year was a massive 12% raise. This year, a measly 4% raise.

So not bad overall but I'm still an i6 lol. idk what the pay band/ranges are for grade levels but maybe I'm in the i7 range already, idfk.

I7 and received RSUs the last 4 years. Sounds like either your performance is poor or your manager is giving their RSUs to other employees.

@ga Privileged to be here for below average pay? You are joking right? Getting paid means my family gets fed. I'll always be more interested in getting paid that who I work for. Dell doesn't give a rat's a-s about us (their actions overthe last 5 years are more than enough evidence of this), so none of us should give a rats a-s about Dell.

I'm here because I'm all-in for Dell but are you? You sound like you're more interested in getting paid than working for Dell. Perhaps if people were more thankful of being a Team Member at Dell then they'd feel privileged to be here. If you are a slacker then go now.

Sure Dell pays about 20% less than I made at a similar role with another company. However I do roughly 80% less work, anything I don't done is someone else's problem at the end of my shift. That kind of peace of mind is hard to find at other jobs I have worked.

@cq lol what?!

I don't know what to tell ya but I'm sitting at 110k salary + 5k bonus/year as an IC6. Execs make FAR more than that at Dell lmfao.

And as for the job I spoke of, again... idk what to tell ya but that's what it pays. No exec at large corporations are making under 500k/year dude. 300k/year at the bare minimum.

This is specifically AT DELL

Depending on the location, org and years of experience and/or years at Dell... Sr. Managers range from 148 - 211k/year

Directors are: 230-340k/year
VP's: 354-556
C level execs: way over 500k/year.

@ce

LoL. You are an IC making more than executive outside of dell? The tall tales in this forum.

This isn't always true. I'm an IC and recently had an offer for an executive position at another company and they came in $20k less salary, less bonus and overall less benefits for 2 to 3 times the work. I'm not even including the RSUs which have paid out close to 4x my salary+bonus over the last 5 years

It’s the same at a lot of companies. They have to pay more to external hires to be competitive. If you stay a long time they know you’re not likely to leave. Why give you raises or promotions? They’ll probably do it if you’re critical and threaten to leave with a credible offer.

It's fine and called opened market. The good ones move onto better companies and roles. The leftovers stay at Dell.

It's perfectly fine if Dell itself accepted they are a low-tiered company.
They don't and therein lies the problem.

Dell is a 4 that likes to pretend it's a 9 and has fooled some into thinking it's a 6.

This has only been obvious the last 10y if you kept your eyes opened on the job market.
Dell is a low-budget outfit and it's been that way for a while now.

most of the work there is perfunctory. the leadership rank filled with unimpressive people.

It's an end of career place.

Stop playing the "this is a meritocracy" based performance company.
Quit in good standing and do something different for a while then go back to Dell.

19-29% pay increases every time. Ask me how I know!

There is something to say about the folks that just need a steady job.
No Corporate Ladder focused bs can lead to a less stressful job, but you do have to do some basic career improvements to stay relevant.

Good Luck. Do da need-full.

@at agree, I'm in a high cost location in Europe and made more at Dell than I do now for a similar (senior) role. Make more than enough though so all good. 😀

I guess it depends a lot on the market in your country. Not hard to believe Dell pays bad for the US standards, but in Europe it still pays very well compared to local bigger companies.
Especially because most IT multinationals and big techs concentrate the vast majority of their European jobs in just a couple of countries, so unless workers live there or are willing to relocate, those jobs are not a real alternative.
I'd like to leave Dell, but apart from the current sh---y market condition one big factor that's stopping me is that any position with the same senioirty in a local (big company) is paid 10 to 20% worse.

@OP leave to AMD the moment you can. Don't entertain any worthless counter offer Dell make you.

As an I6 I don't even come close to this salary after 20 years at Dell.
