Thread regarding Optum layoffs

is this illegal

is this illegal? uhc uses vendor software from american companies. my team in india uses the software as a basis to build inhouse software. upper management at uhc (mostly american) and optum (mostly indian) migrate to the inhouse app and sunsets the vendor software.
i don't think it's a straight copy that's being done but the software is extremely similar.

Generally not illegal. You always have the ability to copy software products as long as you don’t use or have access to the source code. This happens all the time.

depends on the license used. it's entirely possible they didn't do their homework and could get in trouble IF anyone could ever find out about it. and basically all "technology" here is the result of lazy copy + paste without care or due diligence from the usual suspects

if it’s open source software such as a Google Product, re-branding is a typical practice

Not much innovation comes out of Optum IT. It’s an inferior copy of someone else’s hard work. That is the way and why companies are imploding on themselves. Once the incentive to innovate is gone, then we’ll have to rely on the AI Gods.

Software usually contains licenses and if you're using it to create enterprise software and/or you're an organization, the team/org would pay for the license that allows them to use it to create other things.
