Was there any legitimacy to it?

No be there.
What happened? It’s simple - it was a d-mb idea that was never going to go anywhere and it died a quiet death.
This "class action" suit ruse comes up every layoff cycle, usually promoted by legal dimwits who think they're going to "get back" at Chevron. If there was something to it, you'd have lawyers calling you daily.
Since nothing CVX did with the layoffs was illegal it would be difficult to get a suit certified as a class action by the court. It was probably just bunk.
They all won millions but had to sign NDAs
I don't recall this. When was it?
