Thread regarding Windstream Corp. layoffs

Unions

I'm a field ops tech on the CLEC side of the house. The ILEC in my state is union.

Can CLEC opt to form a union (or more likely join the existing ILEC CWA contract) on a state by state basis? Or would we have to do it as an entire organization?

In a Union area, been for years. Can tell you, union leadership (that's what they call themselves) do not care as long as they are not on the chopping block. Delay the inevitable. Never get anything of real substance, joke of a contract, dues go to prop up officers.

Careful what you wish for. Think UAW, Yellow trucking, etc. they got this big beautiful contract. Then they either went out of business or had massive (20k) layoffs. Unions are no guarantees to keep one’s job. My experience with unions has been they protect the lazy. Are they all lazy? No, but a union has no relevance if it won’t punish bad employees and replace them with good employees.

Unions have no strength anymore. If you’re under 30 you don’t value this job and you will quit without notice. If you’re 30-50 you will settle with whatever trash contract they throw at you because you live week to week raising kids and paying a mortgage. If you’re over 50 you’re sick of this place and just here to collect a paycheck and beef up the 401k and save money for assisted living.

Yes, you can join or organize by 1 area. You need 50 % participation I beleive, in your area. They won’t recruit, you have to do it. Then it will take them 10 years to negotiate a contract and by that time, no one cares anymore.

Unions only delay the iŋevitable more quickly. I would look at finding a better job if you think unioŋs will protect yoù.
