Has anyone in CA that weren't selected applied for unemployment yet? I read severance does not disqualify you for employment but given the amount I'm being paid out after 10+ years, I'm not sure if that factors into the weekly unemployment payment? Hoping to hear some examples from people that applied and received unemployment. And then there is the tax consideration too and thinking I may want to delay it for a few months to push some of my unemployment payments which is max of 6 months into 2026. Like to hear some advice from others.

My last date of employment was in mid-July, but I didn't submit my unemployment insurance claim in California until a month later. Has anybody else been in a similar situation where they delayed submitting and were successfully able to backdate the unemployment insurance claim to the first day off payroll?
I've gotten a couple payments so far. I got labeled as someone who is likely to exhaust their benefits and having to jump through hoops for a program called "RESEA", requiring additional assessments/trainings.
The fact people are getting downvoted for claiming UI benefits is absurd. I spent 19 years contributing while at CVX, I'm going to use the benefit. I'm not sitting on my a-s milking it, I am actively applying for work.
@d2 B.S. people are entitled to unemployment when they are laid off, if and until they find another job (or for 6 months). Don’t be a nasty f like DJT!
Yes, you are allowed unemployment in California because you were technically laid off. Do everything on line (it’s easy). You paid into it, so use it. You’ll have to report weekly on your job search… they allow you to use LinkedIn, Monster, etc. for your job search. Good Luck!
You can go online or even call and set it all up. Takes about almost 4 weeks to start receiving the money.
@D2, Workers pay into unemployment throughout their careers. This is taking the money that is earned/owed, how ever you want to word it. This is NOT the reason taxes are so high in California. The government in CA is why the taxes are so high.
So glad I moved out of state as soon as my AEOI was accepted.
I’ve been wondering the same- can I delay filing until next year to avoid increasing my tax burden this year? Without decreasing the benefit
@d2 you do realize that OP can do both, right? Like collecting unemployment doesn't mean people don't want to work. Applying to jobs also doesn't mean you're going to get one right away. Seriously, keep your bs opinions to yourself. People got laid-off and unemployment is a benefit to help ease the blow. We don't need an a--hole telling laid-off people to go get a job. They're already trying.
Yes, I took the AEOI after 36 years at Chevron. I applied for unemployment, disclosed my severance pay, and my unemployment was accepted. I've been receiving it since the beginning of June. My last day on Payroll was May 1st. Based on what I'm guess you made, you'll qualify for the max, which is $450 per week, with a max payout of $11,700.
Enjoy the extra play money, I use it for car parts, and drinking and eating.
@OP why apply for unemployment instead of just applying and getting a new job? That’s one of the reasons California taxes are so high/state government is so 👎🏼
