Thread regarding UnitedHealth Group Inc. layoffs

When will it happen?

With today’s email, when do you think layoffs will happen? August or Sept? Seems like October would be way delayed.

@kk Thanks for sharing, Jake. Can you let us know what areas this will be offered in? It's interesting that they would choose to do this during such a busy season. We'll definitely keep an eye on how it unfolds.

@f7 Optum is separate from UHC. UHC is a payer whereas Optum is on the provider, consulting services and solutions LOBs.

We were notified of another HUGE wave on October 23rd

@OP Another one in Sept. that’s solid as of this moment from a manager friend of mine who’s in really good with one of the veeps. They keep cutting but not clearly giving people time to plan. Polish up your resumes, start seriously looking, look for alternative sources of income, and when it’s time for you to resign do it on a Thursday like they do and have Friday be your last day.

Remember they don’t care about us. If leaders had ANY integrity they would pay themselves the average of all the non-leader salaries (the CEO alone is making millions!). Have them live off what we have to live off of. Give them the same “bonuses” and “1% raise”.

Who knows where UHG will end up at but it’s clear you either jump, wait to be thrown off, or better yet create your own side hustle and ride out this mess as long as you can doing the bare minimum. The more layoffs the more apathy people will have towards their jobs and the less people will go “above and beyond”.

More RIFs will happen. UHC will definitely drop LOB that cant produce. I wouldn't be surprised if C&S (medicaid) is ramped down. Also Optum Health. They have already off loaded most of Landmark, I am sure the skilled nursing agencies they bought will be next under the microscope. Anything that isnt profit turning is up for being spun off or sold or just completely shut down. This is jusy an opinion based on observation though not fact.

@fk why do you say that?

@f7 In 2024 Witty wanted to get rid of parts of Optum Health. He said it was not profitable so he directed the VP’s (GM and KM) to show profit or he was going to cut them the ICM’s. All year the managers eluded that they had to save the staff. Production Metrics went up, and a new plan to review every acute admission was born even if it met their admit criteria. Denials went up. There were soooo many letters going out. Minimal Peer to peers cause not every hospital has the staff to do them. Later during the year the nurses were thanked for their part in showing Witty that the the ICM’s could deliver. It was at that time a week or so before that meeting that all those mandatory fraud and abuse learn sources went out. And of course third quarter earning were through the roof.

@f1 they need to separate Optum from UHC. Optum has way too many people in positions for no reason. Literally see 18 HCE’s reporting to one director in C&S

Bet they will target those areas that lost money. Optum health lost money. Down 7 percent. They will target clinical services. OCM doesn’t need 1200 nurses. Fully operational it needs like 500 or less. They can outsource to Philippines . UHG has been bringing in Filipino nurses and registering them in a state , take the nclex, pass the test, fly them back to Philippines . They have a license but are not in the US. Calif is the only state that does not allow this. Calif requires you actually have to live in the state.

@cp This tracks with what I have heard about the new CEO (SH) being opposed to having remote workers.

If they are getting rid of anyone, they should start at the top. They need a fresh perspective.

I would expect August and sept layoffs to have updated numbers for the third quarter call in October. Likely there will decent cuts for the rest of the year.

@da I agree majority of the RIFS were accurate but now everyone is just throwing all kinds of dates out there just to stir things up. So this site is no longer accurate. We won't know until things happen at this point.

Isn’t it a little bit premature to label a post about August 7th RIFs as false info?

In Spring 2024, a post 10 days before Optum Tech large RIF was accurate.

I have read postings here since 2019. Majority of predicted RIFs were correct.

Are all posts stating an upcoming RIFs accurate? Probably not. Are some accurate, yes.

August 7th is the definitive answer on proof of predicted RIF or not. That is the moment of truth.

I appreciate the people who are in the know for posting accurate RIF information. I also respect those posting accurate information who refrain from revealing information about themselves so that may remain anonymous.

@cp will it be in the benefits department again the same group that was offered VRSP and some were layed off anyway? It just seems so weird to me to do it in the upcoming busy season.

@cg not fake my friend. We are planning the mass layoffs for next week (main targets are remote workers and Corporate Execs). This isn't something we want to do but we need to turn things around for the shareholders.

@cg
FTE counts per year:
350,000 2021, 6.06% increase from 2020
400,000 2022, increase from 2021
440,000 2023, increase from 2022
400,000 2024 decrease
380,000 2025 decrease, FTE count reported on Q2 2025 earnings call

In 2024, there was a target goal of 10% RIF.
