Thread regarding USAA layoffs

3 years - it’s weird

I just heard about this site from a co-worker. I’ve been at the bank for 3 years, coming from so-fi. Reading this site I feel so validated. I keep saying to my co-workers and boss. Things are weird here at USAA. The way we do business, the way we manage risk, the way we treat employees, the way we disregard regulations or hyper focus on other regulations. 90% of the time we are doing nothing. 10% of the we are doing work that literally adds zero value, or is the opposite of what we should actually be doing. It feels like leaders head is in the sand and old school employees just cheering on not realizing it’s the downfall.

I’ve been here 5 years. Been in banking 15. Last year they fired possibly the best boss I’ve ever had in my entire life, and almost anyone who’s ever had him as a director would agree. How are they making these decisions? USAA, decisions like this is (part) of what’s giving off this “weird” vibe.

It’s unlike any place I’ve ever worked. And it seems like everyone is dealing with a narcissistic/sociopath boss.

I’ve been here 18 months. In that time, 12 of my coworkers have either been fired, quit or forced to quit. I’ve made it the longest. You would think leadership would catch on, but when my boss announced the latest person he axed during a leadership meeting, the people around the table said “those are some tough choices you had to make. Don’t let it get you down”.

It’s weird how angry people get when a Banker is hired in a leadership position at the Bank instead of a veteran. It’s weird how people who’ve been at USAA for 10+ years see it as an almost sacred place instead of what it is - a profit making company. Most large banks carve out programs/organizations for service members and guess what, they’re MLA/SCRA compliant. It’s weird how enforcement actions against other FIs are discussed in forums and there’s a shock horror factor followed by comments about how that could never happen here. Guess what? It’s here too to an unimaginable degree. People who can’t believe USAA would act so irresponsibly are 1. Not in positions that allow for awareness 2. Not realizing that communication is so filtered, watered down and glossed over that they’re missing what’s right in front of them or 3. Drowning in the kool aid.

Yes it’s weird here and so are the employees that make being employed here a personality trait. Mainly those working in San Antonio. IYKYK.

Well I guess we got an exec or 55 year old trolling the site. OP- you’re not wrong. I’ve been here about 3 years as well. It’s the twilight zone. Just keep your head down and start applying like crazy externally.
